a friend of mine coming from austrlia. i guess he can carry a graphics card for me. i have a budget of around 4k INR. any suggestions? i am thinking of radeon 9600 xt or 6600gt. btw i have agp slot.

I was looking at the prices of graphics card and i just figured out that 6600gt is not under my price range :(. so the options i am left with are 1. radeon 9600xt 256MB DDR or 2.geforce 6600 256MB GDDR2 (non gt), both priced around 4k INR. I have checked the benchmarks in tomshardware and 6600 card seems more interesting when it comes to AntiAliasing and anisotropic filtering. What do you guys suggest ? And also, I would like to know whether or not these cards would play modern games like splinter cell chaos theory, call of duty 2 and upcoming games like caesar 4 (yes i am a huge fam of caesar series), alan wake , splinter cell etc etc.

as far as linux is concerned you would need an nvidia card. the ATI drivers, are not so finetuned for linux. and as far as i know ATI has just come out with support for their x1k series for linux.

to be realistic these cards (6600) are not fit to be used with AA and AF in most modern games.

Dont think about the 9000 series as 6600 is better.

now my advice to you is to buy a second hand one here. rather than get one frmo australia, which would be a problem in case of warranty.

lots of people on this forum are selling used 6600Gt many of them still under warranty. try to consider them. they are still good cards.

shamless plug....., i have one for sale too at 5000 + shipping.

And yeah, i am a linux user. I dual boot with windows xp for gaming only. which drivers (ati or nvidia) perform better under linux ?

Obviously nvidia... ATi drivers are .net based.. whaddya expect  ???

Go for a 6600/6600GT

Try getting a second hand 6800GT, that hasn't been overclocked much, those were good cards..
in case u can spend 6~7K u may get a spanking new 7600GT from australia, that would be a good deal

Are you qualified enough to express your sarcasm on ATI drivers? perhaps, kindly elucidate me how many ATI video cards have you used in your entire life. I've build numerous systems with NVIDIA and ATI cards, it's just ATI cards tend to perform better, especially when you scale up the resolution and increase the Antialiasing with Anisotropic Filtering. ATI drivers are just fine, there's nothing wrong with them.

Although, I don't dislike NVIDIA, I think it's great company, but just not as good as ATI, especially in the IQ front.

^^^Dude, read the post correctly.the guy needs a card which has good **LINUX** support.so vandal said ATi's drivers are .net based so they wont work on *nix

Now tell me what do u say?

^^ lol. He was talking about linux driver support...i don't think he was crapping ATI

As for the GFX card...the 7series is the latest...so it would be sensible to go for the 7300GT instead of the 6600...just my 2 cents

Edit: Kumar beat me too it :D

Just a small addition. Only the Catalysts are necessarily .NET based. 3rd party drivers like the Omega drivers aren't. Anyway point still remains that the Omega drivers arent designed for Linux either.

Ok, i think i will stretch my budget to 6k. Now there are few options i can go for 1. geforce 6800gs or 2.ati x800gto. what you guys say? and btw i have system with really low specs, would'nt there be any bottleneck issues with these cards. I have amd athlon 2600+ barton (1.99Ghz), 512MB DDR400 kingston memory with agp 8x slot. and yes 7300gt or gs is'nt out for agp yet.
