CPU/Mobo Which has a better future: Socket 775 or AM2

Which of the below processors sockets have a better and longer future:

1) Intel Socket 775.
2) AMD Socket AM2.

Please reply considering that the there r rumours that the future AM3 sockets processors might be compatible with AM2.
 
Seeing the current range of processors, it is better to go for Intel.... the Core 2 Duo range pf processors are better than AMD's AM2...
 
it all depends on how long u wanna wait..and of course prices... if price is not a problem for u then get a very good intel C2D config now... and if prce is a problem then wait for AM3 to come out and then buy the intel coz prices will dip then...either way its the intel :)
 
I am not concerned with the processor prices. I want to know the future compatibility of the processor sockets. Which socket will last longer and allow better future upgrades (Socket 775 or Socket AM2)?
 
either one you buy you will have a good pc that you will be able to use to handle atleast a year or 2 of applications.....

In that case go in for Intel as AM2 is more like a stop gap arrangement for AMD... The quad cores will be out soon (like in six months and AM2 is gonna phase out by then)...

intel has been stickin with lga 775 for quite a long time and its set to remain for some time with C2D doing so well :) so this way too its INTEL :D

Well, if you are waiting like that, you might as well wait for Carbon Nanotubes or 128-bit computing. :)

I have also heard that AMD's future AM3 processors (including K8L) will be backward compatible with current AM2 socket... So, I think the AM2 might last longer than the LGA775.

But the problem is that, if they are not backward compatible, then because of AMD's supply issues, AM2 processors might run out pretty soon after the next socket is released. For example, AMD has pretty much stopped production of all S939 processors since they released AM2. Compared to this, Intel has publicly announced that they will continue making NetBurst processors for the better part of the next year too (in spite of all the complains that Netburst is crap, and that only Core 2s should be made :) ).

Intel might release a new socket when 45nm comes out next year with DDR3 support...

Also, after 1-2 years, I think the present motherboards will also be heavily outdated. With technologies like DDR3, and Robson, and EFI, coming...
 
The AM3 processors are supposed to have a dual DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. What this means is, you can use the chip's DDR2 mem controller on a DDR2/AM2 based board or use the DDR3 mem controller on a DDR3/AM3 board.

Vice versa is not possible , i.e. an AM2 proc on an AM3 board since an AM3 board will exclusively use DDR3.

The LGA 775 has been around for quite a while, however be warned that a vast majority of current LGA 775 boards do NOT support Core 2 Duo. Its much more than just the socket! :)

Definately LGA775 will outlive AM2...

Kentsfield (Intels Quad Core Chip) is LGA775 as well and theres no reason to think Intel will changed the Socket in the coming year, i.e. 2007...

great point there interestingly that means intel stuck with the same socket standard for single ,dual and quad core ...some great planning by intel ... :)
 
good point and it seems Intel is finally deciding not to cash in on their chipsets (remember each proccy needed a new mobo fiasco). :P

Now it seems they'll settle for cashing in on their CPU's instead. I'd say 775 would be a much longer term product than AM2, which is a DDR2 stopgap solution till AMD can research the next big thing....

So why dont you plop a C2D into your existing 775 board? :bleh:

I reiterate what I mentioned earlier, a major portion of the current 775 boards have zilch Core 2 Duo support. I fail to see how thats long term.

Sure there have been ES Quad core chips being run on C2D capable boards, but you cant say for sure that you may not need a new board once Intel's quad core releases. Likewise, the move by AMD to AM2 was done taking into account additional current requirements which would imply they are keeping quad core in mind as well.

Ultimately IMHO, neither sides can be called "long term". But 775 definately is not.
 
nothing is long term in the computer world is it :P ... but 775 certainly lasted more time than usual and i guess will last a wee bit more :)
 
socket 775 has a better future as the quad core kentsfield will work on any core 2 duo ready motherboard

but even am2 has a pretty good future as am3 processors will work on am2 motherboards
