I have 3 hdds in my desktop and they were mapped into 4 drives. Now one of the hdd is not working and a drive is not mapped.

Luckily, I think all my hdd are still in warranty and I plan to get it replaced. Can you help me with an idea to identify which hdd is it that has actually gone bad.

I understand there is a hit and trial where I disconnect one at a time and find it out but I am trying to find a better and less painful way

Open Device manager. Check under disk drives which disk is missing and unplug that? (The BIOS should also be able to show you this, and may hopefully indicate which channel it is on, if you cannot identify the drives physically as well. This is assuming the disk is not being recognised at all)

If all 3 drives are still listed, double click a drive. Select the Volumes tab and click Populate. Will show you which volumes are mapped to that drive.

I am guessing all disks are the same make and that's what has you confused which one is faulty.

In that case use crystaldiskinfo for reading the SMART info, the serial number is shown there(for most HDDs) that should help you to find out which one is kaputt. Also you could use the Smart info screenshot for RMA. crystaldiskinfo and crystaldiskmark are both FOSS and portable versions are also available.
