Storage Solutions Which HDD to go for ?

Dark Star

Herald
My WD 640AAKS Blue is brimmed and can't force anymore data under its neck so gotta buy a Tb HDD since the price is quite cheap.

So which hard disk to go for ? No WD, since I have heard of quite disastrous cases here at TE itself.

Mediahome was quoting me 2.8k for some Seagate (32Mb Buffer) , I was unknown of the model so got reluctant which making the payment.

Is there any particular version ? How good and reliable is 1.5Tb HDD over 1Tb ? Which one to go for ?

Regards

I have recently bought the Seagate ST31000528AS model 1Tb, 32mb buffer. If there were any WD 1Tb in the Caviar Blue series I would have bought it. But there are only either Green or Black 1Tb drives. So had to go for the Seagate. The drive is ok. Nothing extraordinary about it. Does its job, that's all.

Hey does it make strange sounds during pc boot and shutdown

mine makes a clicking noise but only during boot / shutdown

is it normal?

that's scary......

But no, thankfully no strange sounds from my HDD so far. A clicking sound could be a signal of impending failure. Run Seatools diagnostic on it.

HDD should not make any kind of noise while booting or shut down.

Check with your PSU and also check some diagnostic tools like HD Tune on your HDD.

Not entirely correct... Actuator arm may make a single click while booting & more so on shutdown when it returns to its idle position.... A HDD should not make continuous click sound especially while read/write operation....

@Dark Star : if the new drive is not going to be your primary boot drive and more for storage then i suggest you go for 1tb WD Caviar Green. i know you are wary of WD, but the green ones are good.

The choice is really between WD and Seagate. And all the horror stories that we are reading about the WD Green drives leaves us with Seagate.

I would suggest 1TB Samsung HDD though its hard to find.

I would not recommend Seagate after my bad experience and I got no experience with WD.....

Go forward with that 1TB Seagate from online / Local Chandgarh Sector 34A / 35. In case you want to purchase at 2700/- shipped from our local Chandigarh dealer by eBay, fire PM I will get you one. The model is ST31000528AS with two platters of 500GB each, 32 MB buffer. I am using same HDD since last 2 months, no problem seen till date, has average sustained data write rate of over 120MB in first 400GB averaged to 106MB in the end, random access time of 13.5 to 16.

In the end I would say falling of HDD depends 80% upon Luck / SMPS, not on brand.

my seagate barracuda is a year old and its already got issues. so dont go for seagate.
overall, W.D has better news. (original ones).
i heard there a lot of fake WDs in the market. beware.
