Hi.

I am going to buy a new desktop soon. I have built 2 configs.

AMD Intel
Processor AMD Phenom X6 1090T INR 13,335.00 Processor Intel Core i7 950 INR 14,100.00
Motherboard MSI 890GXM-G65 INR 6,700.00 Motherboard Gigabyte X58A-UD3R INR 11,400.00
RAM Corsair 8GB-DDR3-1333MHz INR 7,200.00 RAM Corsair 6GB-DDR3-1333MHz INR 5,400.00
Graphic Card Sapphire ATI Radeon 5770 INR 8,000.00 Graphic Card Sapphire ATI Radeon 5770 INR 8,000.00
HDD Western Digital 500GB Blue INR 1,670.00 HDD Western Digital 500GB Blue INR 1,670.00
SMPS Seasonic 620W S12II 80+ INR 5,400.00 SMPS Seasonic 620W S12II 80+ INR 5,400.00
ODD SONY DVD Writer INR 1,000.00 ODD SONY DVD Writer INR 1,000.00
Keyboard & Mouse LOGITECH KIT MX3200 INR 2,500.00 Keyboard & Mouse LOGITECH KIT MX3200 INR 2,500.00
Monitor BenQ 24" G2420HD INR 10,800.00 Monitor BenQ 21.5 in. G2220HD INR 7,285.00
Cabinet Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1 INR 4,300.00 Cabinet Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1 INR 4,300.00
Speakers Altec Lansing VS2621 (2.1) INR 1,525.00 Speakers Altec Lansing VS2621 (2.1) INR 1,525.00
UPS Microtek 1 KVA INR 3,400.00 UPS Microtek 1 KVA INR 3,400.00

INR 65,830.00 INR 65,980.00

My priorities are:

a)- A good desktop for 3D and video editing
b)- But should be able to play most games at MID to HIGH resolutions
c)- And should last me at least 6 to 9 months before requiring serious upgrade
d)- Should have above average overclock ability

So please clarify my queries:

a)- At max 65k budget which is a better option to go for? Suggest alternate components if you think these are not good.
b)- Does 1666MHz RAM and 6GB/s HDDs really make a huge difference in real world applications?
c)- In the next phase of my build I will be adding another graphic card, so keeping that in mind which is better- Radeon 5770 or GTS 450 for CF/SLI gaming?

Brief- The rig I am making will undergo constant upgrades at 2/3 month intervals e.g. more RAM, another HDD etc therefore big upgrades like MoBo, Proccy, SMPS etc can wait till 2012, but till then the machine should be able to keep up with my requirements which is 3D, video editing and casual (weekend) gaming.

Waiting for your answers

Get 950 as its better than 1090t.
Get an nvidia card as cuda will help u in editing. Zotac Gtx460 1gb @ 11.5k.
If u will sli then get Corsair TX750W @ 6.9k.
For ups look at numeric or apc 1kva.
look at Benq G2420HD @ 11K

Since you will be upgrading RAm and HDD regularly then I suggest you to get only 6gb or 4gb RAM but get a better GPU like GTX 460 instead

Also i7 950 would be better for your requirements

The i7 build is better for ur requirements.

BTW, if u could accommodate the BenQ 24 inch monitor from the 1090T build in place of the BenQ 21.5 inch monitor of the i7, it would be even better..... :p

I would recommend you to go for the amd rig.

instead of 1090T, get the 1055T & gigabyte 890gpa ud3h board. If your 3d & video editing is not too heavy on the ram then i suggest you to go for 4gb ram & with the money saved get a decent cpu cooler like noctua u12p & you can easily push the 1055t to 3.5-3.6ghz eyes closed.

If you can extend your budget of the cabinet to around 5.7k then get the tempest evo. it was much superior to 690. IMO i would never recommend 690 to anyone at the price of over 4k.

Also think about getting a corsair psu. their warranty and after sales is supposed to good here in india.

what is really funny here is that again people are telling the poor guy to buy a good gfx card & better psu for sli, even though he has clearly mentioned that gaming is only gonna be casual, his main use is 3D & video editing. Also people blindly recommending him to get the i7 over the x6 even though they perform exactly the same on same clockspeeds in apps that use only cpu, like 3d render engines & video editing to an extent.

If u are going to do 3D stuff then yeah extra 2 real cores will definately help you ;)

Buy VX550 and save some money so that u can invest in a better graphic card like GTX460 which has great features like PhysX, CUDA, OpenCL & Direct Compute 5.0 which will help you in rendering stuff and one thing more that all these features of Nvidia Graphic Cards are getting way too much support from software companies and they are adding support for these features in their softwares... for eg. Photoshop

what is funny is that u forgot to read that he wants to play games at high settings and its his wish to do SLI. 1055t is way behind 950. Can u give a review where 1090t and 950 perform same?

Bench - CPU - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News - here you go clock to clock the i7 950 and 1090T are neck to neck + it is cheaper to set up AMD rig at this price point than Intel and you need to get the requiste Tri-channel memory for Intel for the performance boost we look for, but then this is just my view point :) hope this helps

Also will recommend getting a Seagate Hard Drive, infact get two data redundancy

and for UPS go for a APC over Microtech, you won't get the save 1KVA backup, but the 800 VA by apc CAN EASILY DO BETTER than any Microtech piece ~ 3.5K

he has written he wants to play on mid-high settings, which i am sure a single card will handle. I did miss the sli future upgrade so that was my bad.

1055t is not way behind 950. As i already said on same clock speeds they will perform the same (1055t + mobo will cost way cheaper compared to the intel setup, with the money saved you can easily buy a cooler like noctua u12p & push the 1055t, not to mention the amd x6s run much cooler than the intel i7's). Sorry but i dont have any link to the review, maybe you could check the anandtech scores for cinebench for both cpu's running the same clock speed. I am currently using both of them in my office & they perform the same (1-2% either side)

@ALPHA17
in the bench you mentioned i find i7 950 to be better in everything except 2-3 benches whether its lower is better or higher is better. also 950 is clocked behind 1090t.

@stormblast
no hard feelings buddy :) . which apps you use in office.

ya in the benches overall i7 950 is better

and i7 950 + a good cpu cooler would provide good over clocking opportunities and it would be better than X6 1055

Go for the AMD rig..it'll allow you to get a bigger monitor and more RAM in the same budget, which will make a bigger difference to your daily computing, than shaving a few seconds off some tasks.

HOw much of the Core series architecture is fully utilized in real time like TPM locking and all + to get a Core i7 950 and a requiste motherboard you spend like ~ 25K - 30K,
as well for this 1090T setup maximum including a 890GX based system you spend no more than 22K tops, in the end this is my PoV that states there is not substantial difference to justify getting an Intel system without the requiste board + tri channel memory

* As an animation student I'm using a AMD based system even after people told me to get Intel but in real time day to day activities and MAYA I don't see a substantial difference ( ~ 5 - 10% ). :) so for me an AMD rig is VFM FTW :)
