I have had my fair share of walkmans and sandisk products.
Currently i only use my xperia ray to play music on the go.
Please recommend something serious excluding anything from the apple stable. I'm looking for some of the best players atm.
Not looking for a total media player i don't watch videos on tiny screens, just want my music to sound great.
Thanks in advance.

Tricky question to answer.

  • What is your budget?
  • What do you want in your best sounding player? Neutral / Flat (which Sandisk players - irrespective of what you tried, already are), more warmth, "musical"?
  • Would you live with terrible UI and usability for want of sound quality?
  • What IEMs / Headphones do you plan to use with them - now and in the near future?

To add to Santhosh's list.

It might also be helpful to know format/quality of audio files you use. Also, if you see yourself at some stage using an amp with whatever iems you currently own or a pair that you might acquire in the near future then getting a player with a line out is advisable.

In my case I really couldn't afford a Colorfly, HM-801, ibasso dx100 etc etc ................ so the imod with a portable amp was the way to go for me

10-15k
Don't mind either.
Yes unless it looks like it's been designed by a child.
I have a pair of M2's and another M4 on the way to be used with the player, might get the XBA-03's later, have the m-50 and looking for the DT770 but those i use only on the pc so yea only iem's with the player.

I think yours is the most sensible option to take - given the issues with all the "high end" players.

psyph3r,

Why do you need a high-end player with M2, M4 or even XBA-03? At the end of the day, an IEM contributes most of the 'SQ' improvements. Why not skip XBA-03 + player and get something in the top-tier based on your preferences (EX-1000 / FX700 / W4 / UM3X / SE535LTD / SM3v2 / CK10 etc., etc.,)?

As for player, even an un-modded iPod 5/5.5G -> LOD -> Amp should work well, though buying a good amp could set you off by a little more than 10-15K like Meier 2SD, UHA-6S MK II, Arrow 4G, Pico Slim, RSA Amps (ask Ritvik & bennysachdev about them. I have no idea!). It does not make you feel like handling a medieval torture device as most 'audiophile' devices tend to be. It is functional, rock-boxable and sounds fine once you by-pass the high output impedance headphone out.

I truly believe its about synergy. If you know what kind of sound signature you like (which you'll only know after auditioning all the combinations of daps with different iems that you can lay your paws upon). You'll know which dap sounds best. A warm sounding dap with a warm sounding iem can make your rig..........................................well......................................................warm sounding.

@esanthosh Thanks for the suggestions, now i'm more confused than i was before posting this :)
I guess i will save up for better iem's and get any decent player.
