I have a Dell Inspiron 580s with Core i3 2.9GHz processor. I have been using it for more than a year now and am quite satisfied with its performance.

But recently I have gone crazy about SSDs. Mainly after seeing the comparison videos of HDD vs SSD in youtube.

I opened my cabinet and noticed that there is 1 more HDD slot available.

40GB Intel or 64GB Kingston is on my mind. Just for installing windows and MS office and a few more softwares.

Suggestions, advice!

Thanks in advance!

Not so much.

I have two Agility 3 running in RAID0. Benchmarks are much better, and yes the boot and desktop is quicker. Is it worth the cash?

Don't think so. My 640AAKS was pretty quick too, the two things that are much better are the absence of seek noise and the quick starting of apps that are on the SSD. FWIW, most of the apps that generate a lot of trash are still on the 640 for me, so I don't get un-needed writes.

Here's a shot of these guys, do keep in mind a software RAID adds its own latency. I will try later to switch back to single drive config and see if that helps the incompressible results.

I am not able to make head or tail of what you have replied. I don't have much idea about RAID, Agility etc. Can someone explain me in plain english?

SATA II?
Those Agility 3's are getting wasted on that.

III. This is a 880G board.

I realised that and switch the BIOS to 6 GB/s mode but there was actually no improvement in the benchmarks. A few were better and a few were worse.

For general purpose both intel and kingston SSD are pretty good. I am really happy with my 80GB intel 320 SSD which i got for 9.5k two months back and it comes with 5 years warranty. That said, the drive seem to have a bug, where if your system shuts down abruptly there are chances that your drive shows up with just 8MB of space and will be unusable. I didn't have any issues so far since i have an ups and always shut down the system properly.

Yeah it is reliable, say that you are from techenclave to either Mr.Kamal or Mr.Navin. Can't promise discount but atleast you'll get a good service comparatively :P.

saiyan,

firmware update fixing that 320 series bug is already available.

have a look at intel support.

OP

i am sure your last years system is on sata 3gbps and not 6 gbps and i would advice buying sata 2 ssd if you are not planning to upgrade for another yr or so.

^Yeah i saw that but i am not sure if that is fixing the issue. Haven't really looked into yet.

Reviews seem to say otherwise. Might have to do with the specific controller on your board? Or is software RAID actually holding you back?

^^Possibly. The board says 6Gb/s. I'm going to go back to single disk and check the benchmarks.

Aren't you in the eye of the storm?

Even when the board says 6Gb/s, there are only a handful of ports which will be running on the Sata3 controller. Do check that and connect accordingly.
