I have a friend who needs a laptop. She's constantly shifting at regular intervals, and travels a lot. Yeah, and she's not a big tech-freak, so she expects a really rugged laptop which will not demand too much maintenance.

You guys have always been helpful, so I thought of putting up a query here.

The requirements are as follows.
Low-maintenance is the number one priority. It should be able to tolerate rough use and not break-down in cases of a slight physical bump.

A really fast processor (Core 2 Duo 'Memron'), RAM (1 GB or more), a high capacity HDD (preferably Seagate, 7200 rpm), a good graphics processor (only for regular gaming) , Wi-Fi, mini PCI wireless card, Bluetooth, a good DVD ROM/RW, a firewire and loads of USBs.

A 15" or a 15.4" screen.

The budget is around 40K.

The servicing should be decent too.

Thanks again guys. :)

i would suggest a extend the budget a bit more and buy a thinkpad if ruggedness is the primary concern, though i would suggest inspiron 1525 in this price range

A couple of clarifications:

A frequent traveler will NOT like a big laptop. 15.4" is not a wise choice. Stick to 14.1" or still smaller 13"/12".

Almost all latest laptops are pretty much built to take 'slight' bumps without much damage. But, care should be taken to prevent much abuse.

A regular 5400rpm HDD should be fine. 7,200rpm drives are available in select models and may lead to more heat output.

Most of the time on-board graphics works out to be a decent solution for occasional gaming. If your friend is very particular about certain games and/or certain level of details in games, then a dedicate GPU would be required. All mainstream laptops come with on-board graphics solution. Certain higher end models only come with good dedicated graphics solution.

Coming to the service/support, where would your friend mostly be traveling to? Within India or abroad? All laptops purchased here come with National warranty. Some offer on-site warranty, but most of them offer carry-in warranty, in which case you'll have to carry the laptop to the nearest service centre. Some models also carry 1-yr international warranty.

the above points should help your friend to narrow down the choices to a select few models. hope it helps.

^ and may we know on what basis have you made this dubitable statement? FYI, all MNC laptops come with International warranty, albeit on select models and/or at a higher cost. From a review posted here you will find that Sony's support (with drivers and updates) is not the best.

I would prefer a Dell anyday over a bling bling Sony.

I'd never recommend a smaller or smallest screen.

Yes 17" is not ideal. I'd go for Dell Inspiron 1525(with budget as 40k) or w8 for Dell Studio 15 :)

u can go for Dell Vostro 1500 it will come to 43k

Config:

C2d 2 Ghz

2gb ram

160 gb hdd
