Which laptop?

My friend wants to buy a new laptop, and asked me for some advice. His usage will be some light ofice work, and mainly entertainment - music, movies, light gaming, and ebooks. His budget is around 80K (its quite flexible).

How are the tablet PCs? I think they'll be great for reading ebooks? The acer tablet pc is for about 84K.

Wow, that is awesome....widescreen, 9700, 1gb ram, dvd-rw, and a TV tuner!!! Really cool... except for this -

Integrated AC 97 2.2 SPDIF extention compliant audio codec with built-in high quality stereo speakers with sub-woofer & Mic

Sub-woofer? WTF???

This shoddy marketing really turns me off! Neways, how is the Pentium M proccy? Though my friend wont need a high-end cpu, he is spending almost a lac.

The 1.7Ghz dothan powering the iball lappy is really very good and shud take care of all your gaming and power needs. Basically there is nothing that this laptop won't be able to handle except for gaming at insanely high resolutions with all effects on.

heh, nah m8 that lappy really has little woofer on the bottom side. and onboard sound was wayyyy better than i expected from laptop speakers.

That is rally good laptop from iball( emperor ).

The max resolution supported is awasome. The screen quality is awasome. no ghosting what so ever so its good enough to even watch DVDs. I watched Matrix and 2 fast 2 furious on it and it had 0 ghosting.

Played HL2 and CSS with ease.

TV tuner works great tested it. Also has Video in so you can connet your camera or camcoder to it using Svideo or composite in.

All in all one of the best combination i have seen. Dothan, WSXGA with high resolution support. TV tuner, 9700. I havent seen soo much in 1 lappy in 80K range yet.

Beware the Mobility 9700. Trust me, I came across two notebooks one by Asus, the W1 I think and the other I can't remember, but both heated up like crazy after I removed speedstepping and ran Doom 3. Both of the notebooks crashed after 10 minutes of gaming.

A much better buy would be the Toshiba notebooks like the M40 for instance, with an onboard Geforce 6600. It perform much better and come at around the same price.

Also check out the Acer notebook with the Radeon X700. I'll check up on the model and post in a bit.

Acer notebook and X700?? Are you talking abt the Acer Ferrari?? Check out my review of it..... Amazing gaming performance for a lappy.

but the Indian version is a disappointment for 99K. only 512MB Ram and 1.6GHz AMD proccy and a smaller HDD....

LOL if i remember correctly the m40 is also known for heating. Also the price is a little over 1lakh. Dunno about the heating problem on the iball one but maybe funky can comment.
About the processor i am sure the ones here come with Pentium M 715 and Ddr2 512Mb ram. Neways both are good deals but the toshiba is a bit overpriced for the performance it offers.

The model is the Acer 4600. It has a DVD-writer, Radeon X700, 15.4" WXGA screen. Click on this link to see it.

The only downside is that it comes with only 256 MB of DDR2 memory. But given it's price of about 65k, I'd say put in another 256 MB and you get a great buy within 70,000 Rs.

@blade: No, the Toshiba doesn't heat up, I had tested myself. It won the best performance during the CHIP notebook comparison in June05. But yeah, I'm not too sure about the price.

So which do u guys think is better? Acer 4600 or iball? (leave aside tv tuner for now).
How much would 256mb ram for the acer cost?
My freind was asking me about quality of iball, as acer is a reputed brand. Is iball reliable?

I wouldn't buy an iball...I'd rather buy a light & small form factor IBM/Compaq for 60% of that price and use the rest to upgrade my PC to a mean gaming machine...

Unlike a desktop, the manufacturer brand (sp. the QA ) really matters for a notebook ....

It's not practical to play FPS games while travelling (highCPU + GPU utlization = low battery running time...not to forget the impractlcality of hooking up a mouse while travelling)

My friend wants a laptop...has no interest in buying/upgrading a desktop. And he is not going to do any heavy gaming. Actually, his main use will be reading ebooks. Is there any other device better suited for this? (Don't suggest pocket pc - its screen is too small).

if e-books is what he is primarily interested in , why not go for widescreen models from Dell/Compaq for arnd ~50 K (Dell 6000 series (not sure check the dell india site) and compaq V2000 series)

Most of these mid end models would be Pentium M based with the usual wi-fi/bluetooth 40GB HDD/256MB RAM .....

Throw in addl 512MB later for 3K which ll enable him to play most games okayishly well

My friend ordered the acer 4602, for 65,500. But it has only 256mb ram.

We asked in a number of shops for the iball, but everyone said they stopped selling those due to service problems.
