^^Every distro has its own package manager and wrapper for easy installation. Though you can also install from trallbars.

^^That folder icon ? The second icon from the start menu . That could be the file manager for fluxbox .

Although i got my drives when i unmount it it says permission denied...:huh:do i have install it to access the drives?also tried xubuntu in my lappy all applications&drives are accessible but can't connect to internet...

IIRC iceweasel is the unbranded version of firefox because firefox brand is protected by mozilla and mepis/debian have some issues with it...

workaround:you can lunch file manager as root and the error would go away.in shot whenver you get permission denied error in linux, try as root;)

For long term solution. you could permit normal user to mount volumes.the exact procedure would depend on type of volume(ext, ntfs, fat etc). check the man pages for more into.

^^Eh ? :P

Just launching file manager as root won't do anything. Don't forget to right click -> properties and change permission from there :P

Thanks for helping out...fianlly figured it out...installed mepis&also PCLOS..both are running stable with less RAM...

Though i find PCLOS to be more user friendly for newbie :)

All applications are working out of box&though i tried xubuntu live CD it had some problems palying audio files since it said d/l codecs&damn thing was not connecting to internet...:S still coudn't figure why it didn't connect...

The rest PCLOS recognised all h/w&its drivers were properly loaded..but one thing is there any tweakPCLOS site for disabling unwanted servies..:P

Still need some time to experiment with these distros..:)

Need to update that both PCLOS&antix show false baterry warnings..I disabled the action to be taken by OS&thought let me see how long the battery lasts..

After false battery alarm i was able to operate the lappy for almost an hour without any problem with music playing, playing some board games...then lappy turned off...

Also my lappy is getting hot&all i could see the continuous blowing of hot air from side vents...I set the profile the conservative/powersave still no use...is it due to excessive usage of swap file or processor running several unwanted processes?

Any help from linux users?:(how to install the rest of office application in pclos?i find only abiword,no excel ,no ppt...will a portable version of open office wrk?

isnt openoffice available from pclos repositories and cant you install it the "normal way" for that distro? if not then you may need to download it from main site openoffice.org ....

dont go for Ubuntu as you are on ATI and that too ultra out dated card.. u'll have to get your ass slagged to make it work smoothly or the way its meant to be used. Stick to MDV or something else.. some other flavour. Ubuntu just sucks :P

^^Well, when a neiche distro like Dreamlinux and Sabayon can have configure fglrx even with unsupported kernels, then why can't the big mouth accomplish it ? when it comes with old kernel i.e. supported by fglrx ? In ATI support it does sucks :P
