Hey,

I'm new around here, got to know about the whole Thailand flooding thing. For whatever reasons I kept postponing the 500 GB HDD purchase over the last month and now I have very few options.
1. WD My Passport Essential SE 500GB (2.5 Inch / USB 3.0) WDBACY5000ABK, 36 months warranty, - Rs. 3350
2. Buffalo Mini Station PXT 500GB USB Hard Disk, 36 months warranty, - Rs. 3000
3. WD Elements SE 500GB (USB 3.0) Portable Hard Drive (WDBPCK5000ABK), 12 months warranty - Rs.3150
All on letsbuy.com with Rs. 500 off the prices mentioned here.

I don't have a USB 3.0 port on my laptop, so any info or review on the Buffalo model? Or is WD so good that I pay a few hundreds extra?
And I'm not sure if option 3 comes with USB 3.0 cable.

Thanks in advance! :)

Welcome to the forums..!

Go for WD My Passport Essential. And as for USB 3.0 its backward compatible with USB 2.0

Thanks for your response. :)

I understand that USB 3.0 is backward compatible with 2.0, but for WD elements, it does not mention whether the cable is for 3.0. I was wondering if it could be like the Seagate HDDs which ship with 2.0 cables and 3.0 cable has to be purchased separately.
It also seems like other websites offer a 3 year manufacturer's warranty for the same model whereas letsbuy mentions 12 months.

Since I don't have a very urgent need for 3.0, I thought I could go for the Buffalo HDD. SO any reviews on that or should I blindly buy WD My Passport?

buffalo is well known as well.. also 3 years is the warranty given by the company. so go for 3 years warranty.
if your laptop does not have 3.0 and you are sure that you wont upgrade anytime soon you can go for 2.0 that will save you 300 bucks but
thats bout it.. however if you opt for 3.0 you will have the benifit of gaining higher speeds anytime you use it other systems having 3.0 and future proofing.

Passport USB 3.0 that I bought from Letsbuy couple of months back did carry 3 years manufacture warranty (Letsbuy mentioned it 12 months) and came with USB 3.0 cable bundled. Even if you dont have USB 3.0 ports, you can always copy stuffs from your friend's PC with USB 3.0 at good speeds. So extra 300 is worth it.

Wow! Look at these prices! I had got the WD Passport Essential USB3.0 500 GB for 2240 from Letsbuy 3 months back. This model is very good and i would suggest this one.

Thanks everyone! I ordered the WD Passport at Rs. 2850 today.

I went for Passport over Elements cos of the warranty as mentioned on the website, though they may both have 36 months in reality. Apart from the Mac compatibility and backup software, there is no difference right?

BTW, the Buffalo PXT model's price has also jumped to 3600! :O
