Storage Solutions Which Sata HDD To Buy ??

Raid 0 is big no no if you wana store any significant data on the HDD.

Even if 1 drive develops bad sector or conks out you will loose entire data.

I will go with hitachi, its quieter than Seagate drives. Seagate gives typical krr krr noise while accessing data from hdd. The Hitachi is slower by hardly 3-4MB/s or so. But its dead silent. Havent had any problem with any of the 3 hitachi drives i have.

On the other side i have had 2 failed 7200.10 320gb drives and there are close to 4-5 cases of only TE members with bad experience with that drive. Its good performer but simply hate drives that make noise while operating.

Which of seagate/hitachi creates less heat, coz evn that must be the factor apart fron noìse and speed

Same temps for Hitach T7K500 and Seagate 7200.10 in my cabby , the earlier T7K250 used to run cooler than these

If your 200Gb is from the previous series i.e 7200.8/9 then ofcourse the current series will be much faster

I just checked my Hdd, It is 200 Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.8.

I have decided to buy a single sata hdd.

Which Hitachi Hdd Should i have to buy and for how much ?

What will the prize difference between 250 and 320 Gb ??

Cheers,

Lovebhai.

250 would be 3.8-4k odd , the 320 Hitachi T7K500 series would cost you around 4.7-5k, seagate 7200.10 is 5.1k ... atleast here in mumbai :)

Edit : the model no. written on the Hitachi would be HDT725032VLA360

HDT725025VLA380 for 8mb 250gb hitachi

You can load the OS and have the game installs/game backup's on the faster drive

@ thexfactor, Hitachi HDT725025VLA380 Is Sata Or Ide ??

Will check rate and availability tomorrow.

Thanks Guys..

Cheers,

Lovebhai.

Average speed will be same for both sata and sata2, just that the burst speeds for sata2 reach upto 300mb/sec while they are 150mb/sec for sata ... sata 2 also has got support for NCQ which helps in multi user environment

I check the availablity and rates of Hitachi Sata 250 Gb.

I got the reply from dealer that he has HDT7225025VLA380 Hitachi Sata 250Gb Hdd for 3800.

Is this the Hitachi Sata 2 ?

Cheers,
Lovebhai.

I am planning to get Hitachi 2x250Gb Sata2 Hdds, But installer told me that Sata2 is not supported with the mobo Asus P5LD2-VM-SE Which I Have.

Does Sata2 Supported on my mobo ?

Came across this info a few minutes back on the Storagereview forum....

....important info for people buying the T7K500 series Hitachi HDDs for use on a SATA 1 controller/MotherBoard ....

According to that review T7K500 is set to 3Gbit/s by default.

Previously it was by default in 1.5Gbit/s mode (for compatibility) and setting it to 3Gbit/s was actually discouraged by Hitachi Feature Tool because it might render the drive unusable in an "older system" (=actually quite many new systems as well)... possibly even eliminating the possibility to configure it back to original 1.5Gbit/s if there was no other computer which supported 3Gbit/s and in which to reconfigure it.

If T7K500 is 3Gbit/s by default, doesn't that mean the drive might be useless in some systems and might even be unconfigurable so that it can't be made compatible? Configuring between SATA transfer speed via software seems quite a pain in the a$$, and with default speed set to (not so widely supported) 3Gbit/s even more so. If they only used jumpers like other manufacturers. That way there'd always be a way to reconfigure it back even if the drive ceased showing up in BIOS.

Do you know if you are getting the older T7K250 series HDDs or the latest T7K500 series ones ? I have 2 of the older ones and they are very solid but a bit slow - data transfer speeds of around 56mb/s as against 64mb/s of my T7K500 320GB HDD.

I am not sure if the 250GB HDDs of the T7K500 series are available here at the moment. They were not available about a month back when I last checked.

What price are you paying for the 250GB HDDs ?

As far as i know T7K500 starting from 200 to 500 Gb range and T7K250 is 80 to 200Gb.

I will pay Approx 4400.
