before first use, I have used Acronis boot CD to create partitions & format 1TB harddisks for both WD and Seagate, since they are going to take ages to complete on Windows mode

Now, I have just bought a Samsung drive, I would like to know which lowlevel format tools that your guys use to full-format such huge disks

Samsung site doesnt have such a software :(

I use Partition Magic 8... It creates the partition in windows itself.. hardly takes few mins..

Hiren also has partition magic...

why should it take ages under windows??

just select 'quick format' while creating..

it takes a few seconds..

but anyways if you want to use other tool the GParted takes the cake for me..

freeware and it offers a plethora of general features related to management of partitions..

Thanks guys :)

Actually i meant a FULL Format, which really takes a lot of time on Windows
speaking of which, is there any advantage of going for a full format rather than a Quick one

Full format will only erase the data physically by copying garbage value over existing partition... the drives being new..the value physically will anyways be garbage/null..

manufacturer's make sure to use various methods to destroy data before selling/issuing a new/replacement drive.. and also when a drive is sent for replacement.

as for format speed...im not sure if acronis etc actually perform physical format of the drive so quickly..

but that apart..if you only concern is a formatting a brand new drive then go ahead and use Windows drive management with quick format or GParted..

also, GParted does not ask if you want to format quickly etc.. it generally performs as quick as windows quick format.

one reason i choose GParted is that it let you create a Extended Logical drive 1st and then you can create Logical partitions within the same..the old way like in win98. it also is good for resizing and moving partition.

so choose one which would serve your purpose overall. :)
