PC Peripherals Which soundcard?

I want a new soundcard, music is first priority,as long as the sound comes through in games its OK...I dont need any fanciful in game sound but I need the best possible musical output

Secondly it *must* be able to upmix *any* sound signal to 7.1[preferably 7.2]...it doesn't matter if it does it via hardware or software...[yes I know Creative CMSS 3D is nice but it does a good job only upto 5.1, doesn't handle 7.1 very well] and it *must* have excellent sound quality.

I'm currently looking at the X-Fi it seems to have been much improved on musical output but I'm open to other brands.

Thanks

Revo can upmix any signal to 7.1. Try to get it if you can. X-fi is a good option too. If your primary priority is music, then Revo would probably be a better choice, but X-fi should be an overall better card, considering how kickass it woul dbe in games.

OT: Has anyone found any comprision of the analog output quality between X-Fi, revo, prodigy, x-mystique etc?

Amol was gonna get an EMU 0404. He'd be the best person to answer. The big question is what is ur connection gonna be? Analog or Coax/Optical?

EMU is not the card for surround sound. It is a pro card, with 1/4 mono left + right out - > stereo in 2 channel. You will need a separate 1/4 microphone jack to RCA converter.

Only has a single set of stereo channels. The advantage is the ultra low noise floor, and super sound quailty. If you are thinking of making a home theater, this isnt a good choice.

hmmm ...the creative site lists the flagship 1820M as a 7.1 configurable?...any ideas?...know anyone whos actually used the 1820M?

on paper the card sounds good...lol

1820m won't be very useful for movies. At least not unless you are ready to do a lot of tweaking. There are no wdm drivers for the 1820m, and no signs of them being developed any time soon.

People talking about XFi here but is it available here in India.
If yes can someone tell me the cost of the most basic version on XFi.

Thanks for the heads up but i wont beusing it for movies...music/games...and some TV shows that i download but thats all so im mostly concerned with its musical aspect

i think that the basic X-Fi music comes to about 15 k INR...i know the E-MU 1820M was quoted to me at a price of 38,440 INR

Using an EMU 1280 for playing back TV shows isnt practicable, as most TV shows are recorded from live broadcast with less than 80 db of noise floor, which makes all that low noise floor go to waste.

If you are a true audiophile and have equally matching speakers/amplifier/headphones, only then it's worthwhile investing in such a high end soundcard. Else you will be fine with a X-fi. Get a platinum pro if you can.

What about M-Audio Revolutions 7.1 ?

Sweetly priced and it has got an awesome rating from many sites.

AFAIK, its one of the few consumer cards that doesn't resample sources below 48 kHz, something pretty much all consumer soundcards do (Audigy 2, Santa Cruz, etc.

No card on Via Envy24 resamples. Its only older chips and audigy cards that do.

Yeah, so isn't that a good feature. And for $85, it does look a good deal.

One of the main drawbacks is that there wont be any EAX Support. Basically Creative has positioned themselves in such a way in the gaming market that every gamer will HAVE to buy a Creative card to avail all the sound frills of the game.

I have the Gigaworks S750 atm and will most likely be upgrading to better speakers sometime next year....so you think its worth the E-MU?
