Hello every one. I want to pick up a fast yet stable SSD for my laptop, with a capacity of minimum 200gb. I have been seeing reviews of new and slightly older SSDs on Anandtech and other tech sites. Confusion has always been the case for me in decision making.
So please help me out. These are some of the SSDs that i have come accross on the net but am unaware of the firmware compatibility of them.
What do u all think about it? I am considering the OCZ Vertex LE or the Crucial RealSSD C300
The options are below.

1) Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

2) OCZ vertex 2

3) OCZ vertex 2 pro

4) OCZ Agility 2

5) OCZ vertex LE (Limited Edition)

Are the OCZ and Crucial SSDs available in India? Who is the main distributor?

Vertex 2. Sandforce 1500 ftw.

Agility 2 will also do well, Vertex will give better random performance though.

I'm waiting for a few months to see how reliable these drivers are, then will pick one up.

So i too should wait? Is there a major performance difference between the OCZ vertex LE and Vertex 2/vertex 2 pro?
I cant seem to find a single vertex 2 drive on Newegg or Amazon.

^Wait a bit more for the Sandforce 1500 based SSDs to hit the market. The Vertex 2 zooms past through all the applications trouncing the previous record holder - the Crucial drive.

The LE drives from OCZ which I guess are now sold out were just that, Limited Edition drives made on a sample stock of chips that sandforce had sent to OCZ.

The 1500 is primarily an enterprise class focused controller. The Vertex 2 is a SF 1200 based drive :cool2:

You will not be getting 1500 based drives for general consumption.

To make things murkier, the 1200 and the 1500 are essentially the same chip :rofl:They differ in firmware & validation procedures. This is not to say that you can buy a 1200 based drive and plonk the 1500's firmware on it though

Newegg has it - if NE does I'm sure there must be quite a few left with the other e-tailers as well.

The OP has listed down the Vertex Pro as well. It is the Vertex 2 (vanilla rather) which uses the SF1200 based controller.

And both the SF1200 and the 1500 may be using the same chip essentially but the SF1500 does have an advantage when it comes to random writes.

Has OCZ mentioned that somewhere? Since I have seen peeps going for the expensive X25-E from Intel when the M2 was around. Bottle is one of them. Being expensive is another thing. I'm not sure of the non-availability to the home-user part.

I'm surprised that these are still not sold out, given that OCZ only put out 5000 of these in the market.

The difference in performance is because of the firmware, nothing else. In fact, there is bit of a controversy going on right now about how the Corsair Force based on the 1200 chip performs just as well as the Vertex LE even at random writes. Apparently sandforce shipped the chips with an internal RC firmware that was meant to be exclusively supplied to OCZ for its Vertex 2 drives. If the Corsair Force drive's firmware is updated by a user in the future, it will actually lose performance

Basically, getting the Vertex 2 is the way to go if you want performance.. coz you will be getting LE level numbers.

I'm not sure about enterprise drives, but OCZ sure has canned its enthusiast 1500 based product, the Vertex 2 Pro, simply because they would be too expensive.

Again, the Vertex 2 is a SF1200 based product. It will just have special/tweaked firmware from SF enabling LE level performance.

PS - you should stick around on AT a little more :p Anand has been dissecting the sandforces like anything.

Haha yes! Anand seems to be too good at it after his drive failed.

Yeah, I just found out that Vertex 2 will be SF1200. Sad. :(

I'm waiting for 2 months to see how reliable these drives are, then will get whichever comes in my budget.

Like I mentioned earlier, no need to get sad about the SF1200 equipped Vertex 2.

It'll perform as well as a Vertex LE.

I just got my hands on my second Crucial SSD (ye' olde M225 model), this one is the CT64M225 64gb and its to breathe new life into my 2-yr old HP tablet PC :)

Dunno about benchies, but just replaced the HDD with the SSD and installed Kubuntu Linux 10.04 RC and it boots from GRUB bootloader menu to KDM login screen in 8 seconds flat!!! wooooo!

This is faster than my desktop which has the 128 GB version of the same SSD model, so I think I need a clean/fresh reinstall :)

Well if u say that the Vertex 2 will perform same as the Vertex LE, then why wait for the Vertex 2 and not buy the Vertex LE right now? Is there no performance difference between them?
