Storage Solutions Which SSD?

Ok. I mailed them about few things. Let's see how it goes.
Anybody here owns Samsung 830?? Can they tell me if all the goodies (Norton Ghost, Magician software & Batman: Arkham City) that come with it are worth the extra price?? If not then I'll finalize on m4, but m4 doesn't come with anything at all, not even 3.5" bracket!

@TechHead has the 830 but it was imported from the US IINM.

Not having the bracket isn't a big deal actually. The drive itself is so light, you shouldn't really worry about fixing it to the enclosure. It doesn't have any moving parts unlike the hard drive. But yeah, they should have bundled a bracket. :P

Hey Chirag, have been using an OCZ with Sandforce controller for the last one year and hae had 0 issues. The Corsair has the same controller.

Which OCZ drive?

How big is the difference in games compared to HDD? I guess only the loading time cuts down, but then is it significant enough to justify the price of an SSD?

Samsung 830 64gb/ Crucial M4 64gb / Corsair Force 3 128gb all lie in TIER8 in toms chart.

Hehe! Good to know! ;) I just received a reply from them that Samsung 830 also don't have bracket with it, so that means they're selling standalone version for 12k! :scared14:

Anyway, looks like I'll have to wait a little. Coz things are gonna get even more interesting! ;) I just read an article that by next month, Intel's gonna slash the prices of 320, 330, and 520 Series by 9-38 percent! :D Here's the source: Intel Mulls SSD Price Cuts by VR-Zone.com

Well, I know that windows and office open up really very fast. And people who see Chrome and Office apps opening so quickly are quite amazed. On games, such as Diablo, the load times are non existant. But I dont know how it works on other computers so people may have to comment on the same. Loading time of games has reduced and in some cases more, some cases less.

I am using a Vertex 2.

Ok. Thanks. Does it increase frame rates? Acc to my knowledge, only CPU and GPU decide those. Not sure if drives play an imp role in it.

Nope, an SSD has got nothing to do with improving visuals/performance in the games. It does significantly improve the load times.

Exactly........the HDD is not the culprit for slow fram rates, as its loading the data as per the requirement. Its the CPU or GPU thats lacking in these cases. The only reason for jittering I have seen, were the HDD was the culprit, was when the HDD was throughly screwed..

But the SSD is the single best upgrade anyone could give his/her system. I mean one can actually feel the difference in a lot of real world applications.

For instance, opening/closing a dozen pdfs at a time (a hard drive would take some seconds to do that and the SSD could do it in a flash), game load times are decreased, boot times are reduced, PC shuts down faster by killing the apps faster, working on PS/Lightroom is a breeze, no moving parts/mechanical components thus minimal heat and zero noise etc to name a few. The only major con right now is the price per GB.

Sincere apologies for the OT Avish!

No worries! You're still talking about SSDs, so it's not really OT! ;) Btw, how long it'll take to affect Indian market, if & when Intel slashes the prices?? Coz I'm already getting impatient! :D

Not really sure about that. I've been using my main system without a UPS for almost a year now and there've been power cuts occasionally. But the drive is intact. Or at least I hope it is! :ashamed:

I am using Samsung 830 ssd on dell latitude 6520 and it's solid.
It needs perf optimisation every weekend.
It's not auto scheduled.

I also have Samsung 470 gb on desktop. It's limited by amd sata driver.
Both are good and

Yes I got all goodies. Ghost and bracket and cables and whatnot.

Now a days it's on sale round the clock.
Check slickdeals.

I'm not sure if slickdeals has anything to do with India!

The description for the Samsung 830 128GB that primeabgb is selling says its the Notebook kit. That doesn't come with a bracket, but it comes with a USB-SATA connector instead. Upto you to decide if thats worth it. SSD Magician is free. Norton Ghost can probably be substituted by a decent open-source utility like gparted, but its better to do a clean windows install. If its a standalone drive, there's no reason it should be selling for so much [STRIKE]when the M4 is 7.5k or so[/STRIKE]. Edit: Oops. Prices for the M4 are close to 9k. But still a good 2k cheaper than the 830.

I'm not sure the Intel price cuts will do much other than bring it to a competitive level. Right now the 330/520 series is more expensive than the M4 or the 830.

Also should have ups to ensure there's no chances of data. corruption right?
That stands for any drive, mechanical or SSD. Unless it has a supercapacitor to provide enough power for it to flush its buffers.

What 'perf optimisation' are you performing?
Garbage collection. The Anandtech review says it runs only when the drive is idle. SSD Magician's Performance optimisation forces it, but it kinda ruins it since it runs a benchmark immediately after

I guess I missed that detail

I wish they were selling standalone version too, for around 10k maybe, then I'd have definitely gone for that! :)

Dunno about the larger versions but 330 120GB is ₹ 700 cheaper than 830 & 520 is only ₹ 400 more @ onlyssd.com. I guess even without any extras m4 @ 8.9k looks like the best deal.
