Looking for a UNIX distro which can be useful for a first timer to start with. Starting with basic shell commands and moving on further. Not looking a KDE environment , looking to learn shell scripting.

Should be small enough , looking to install it on virtual machine , hope it would run fine enough. I am looking at FreeBSD . how is it ? size is around 1.4 Gb

I have a few sources to start of it. Additional sources/links are welcome which are simple to understand

Go for Ubuntu.

FreeBSD is for CORE Linux Developer's like writing drivers/modules/system software and Server things etc.

If you just want to work on shell, look for images available for the VM you use. Most of them have atleast couple of basic Linux images available.

Other option is to get server isos of main distris. Ubuntu is a pretty good one here. It will take less than 500mb I think.
