PC Peripherals which ups would be ideal ?

hi,
my friend needs a ups for his dell xps1330.i does not need to hav too much backup time, as the backup generator in his building starts within a few seconds of the power cut.
can anyone suggest the ideal ups as he plans to use his laptop without its battery to reduce heating as his laptop runs for long times continuously.the main requirement is that the modem should not reset on power cut and that the laptop should be protected from spikes.

I think the basic APC ups will do the work, the 500va model. Costs 2k.

^^ there is if you want to run it as a download rig witout screwin up its battery.. anyways even i preferred running it of the ups with its battery out.. and like he said sometimes it also prevents the adapter for screwing (totally worth an investment since iv lost 1 lappy adapter an its replacement cost me 5.7k's ) and the ideal solution is the apc 500.. shud be available for a bargain price of 1.8-2k's!

Get the 650VA one instead, comes with the pc-sync port, the newer 500VA ones comes without it.

Dont NO the price, but 100% sure of protection if u use smart UPS (Online UPS)
