Who knows how to better India?

The attacks and their aftermath again point to the rot that has set into the country's internal security system and a lack of cohesion between civilian and security wings of the government.

One telling example: six days after the attack, even the number of dead and injured keeps going up and down, due to poor co-ordination between the police and hospitals.

More seriously, the Indian police appear to be incapacitated by a lack of money and training. Poor working conditions, rudimentary surveillance and communications equipment, inadequate forensic science laboratories and outdated weaponry are making matters worse.

"The Mumbai attacks prove that the whole system is falling apart. The police in India are working on manpower and equipment assessments last made in the 1970s," says security analyst Praveen Swami.

The fact that the gunmen came by sea - and sneaked into the city through a crowded fishing colony - points to almost non-existent coastal police patrols, as a local officer admits.

All that the police have is a couple of launches. They have no radar.

The Mumbai police - like most police in India - remain in a time warp: they are equipped with World War II vintage rifles and carbines handed down by the army. In most states, an average policeman's salary and status is equivalent to that of an unskilled municipal worker, encouraging corruption.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | 'Rot' at heart of Indian intelligence

Repetition of old drivel, I know, but necessary in these times. If you guys read thru the linked article, you won't find anything new that ALL of us at TE don't know.

Posted it cos I believe that an outsider's viewpoint is also to be taken into account in matters of ur own home. I'd like this thread to be of ppl putting in inputs as to how we can correct these shortcomings in ourselves. I'm not expecting any earth shattering solution or something which will change the world.

I just want to know if there's anything me or you as an individual can do in our immediate vicinity. Cos I intend to go out and try to change the world, but only when I have established myself and secured a future for my children i.e. when I retire from business. Can I or u do anything to change India without giving up our lives (not literally, but giving up the small reliefs/ profits that corruption give us from the bureaucracy etc. etc. if u get my drift)?

Request: Please don't post anything if u don't have any positive solution. I'd rather this query went un-answered than become another "nothing can change" drivel.

^^You've made a valid point there Naga

But like you said yourself, this vicious circle will never end until we humans as a collective learn to keep our fragile ego at bay:(

Things will change if enough people demand it.

Do enough of us care about it :)

I have read so many ppl ranting on after an incident happens, but rarely are they even aware when ppl are brought to justice, months later. That when the system did produce the results no one cared.

The only 'good' thing to come out of this incident is the rich & famous were targeted this time.

I say if the threat to business is great then things will happen sooner. This is why you saw Suhel Seth go on such a tirade, he knows that he's looking at a very bad next quarter.

If we continue to have more incidents then more people will start to ask about it.

The opposition parties have shouted loud & clear about this topic.

You would think if they were fortunate to win the next elections things might change.

My guess with my limited knowledge about how the world works says to increase the salaries of law enforcement officers and school teachers to a level where they become respectable jobs. That will encourage qualified citizens to take up these posts with a sense of pride and do their jobs well. However, the sheer scale of our country would involve a significant increase in taxes (in the case of police and goverment school teachers) and fees (regular schools) which may hamper the growth of the country in the short term.

These guys indeed have old weapons and are not well paid. Frustration is bound to develop. They should be paid more, weapons should be better. An extreme step could be serving army/police for 2 years for EVERYONE in the 20-30 age group!

Stop community appeasement (Read Minority Appeasement) and VoteBank politics and giving TVs,Fridges, chaddis as elections presents. One step towards improvement, niyet?

+1 to that. And more than money, police and law enforcement officials like Judges need to be respected and should have freedom. Our bloody netas should stop treating them like the police are their servants.

Let them gift whatever they want as long as they dont take OUR money to do so. The government does not create wealth, WE do.

Make me president so that I dont have to declare my assets and can go roam around the world for free with my wife+son+daughterinlaw+ramu kaka+dog+...................

tfs link.
IMO Maharastra CM, DCM, SP should take moral responsiblity of their failure to protect civilians and must resign.

Congress is no one to decide whether these personals stays or not.

Though impulsive and nearly impossible but I think in such crisis civilians should vote to decide whether we want or do not want these personals to have authorities. We should have rights for their abduction.

Even if a new circular is passed for new arms for police and RPF I have no fuzziness in visualizing a new political scam wrt buying of arms.

I want Cabinet to give a standup call on what they have accomplioshed once in month for Indians, Goverment must be proactive rather then re-active.
