Hey guys,

If you own a 320GB HDD (SATA), can you tell me how you like it? AFAIK, only Seagate and WD make 320GB HDDs. I am contemplating on buying either of them, although in all likely hood I may end up with the Seagate cos it's easily available.

How do you find the acoustics? Thermal factor? Any issues? I will be using this HDD for some pretty sensitive stuff, so I need reliability.

THANKS!!! :)

AFAIK Hitachi also makes 320 GB drives. I'd say WD is most reliable, second hitachi. Although seagates are the fastest (7200.10 series)

I have 2 320GB Hitachi PATA HDDs(Both made in Thailand). Real good performers. Good temps and fast. One is used internally in my rig and the other is externalized via a crappy chinese made SVB firewire cum USB casing(Good looking smooth metal casing but lousy performance. Firewire performs only 3Mbps more than USB i.e. 30Mbps USB and 33Mbps firewire. It's got the crappy Oxford 911 chipset. I couldn't find the Vantec firewire casing so had to settle for this one as I was itching to try firewire.)

I have 320 GB WD HDD. it runs pretty good and fast. and yeah its reliable. runs little hot maybe because i dont have a good cooling solution :bleh:

Nice :)

Any more supporters for WD/Hitachi?

I have had bad experiences with Maxtor and anyway since Seagate has taken over Maxtor I wanna stay away from them too :)

I have a Hitachi T7K500 HDT725032VLA360 320GB SATA2 HDD totally silent, cool & fast running :ohyeah:

i support & recommend it :)

I have 2x Seagate 320gb running in my PC, they are almost inaudible, only a slight whine when things boot up :D

The thing everyone's talking about Seagate is that you should be lucky to get a quiet drive. I guess you were lucky :)

Strongly leaning towards Hitachi now cos the WD is supposed to be 4X80gb platters and new chip on old technology.....
Udit, Eazy....did you buy Hitachi in India and if yes for how much? Are you using any cooling solutions?

i have seagate 320gb sata. it was a bit loud for me. but after i installed two colling fans i couldnt hear anymore noise from it..

i havent had any probs with it till now..

I second that, Am using same the Hitachi model and it runs cool and quiet compared to my friend's Seagate 320GB 16Mb drive.

lol was it coz fan's noise masked the noise made by the hdd:P

3x Seagate 320GB 7200.10 drives here... all nice and quiet. Drive temps are ~36-37 in peak summer. If possible, get the 8MB Singapore made drive. Its faster than the 16MB made in thailand/china drives. The best thing about seagate is service. If a drive develops a defect, its mostly replaced in 3-4 days.

using 2 x 320 seagate 320 at home. & 2 x 320 seagates in office. all are working properly without any problems. not noticed any noise yet so they should be quiet.

2x Seagate 320GB 16mb drives running silent @ 36C for well over 6 months. One made in Singapore, the other in Thailand - I've found no differences between the two.

lol..  yes. but i like the fans noise better than the grinding and clicking sound of the hdd..

Right about the service aspect. Samsung(for monitors) and Seagate(for HDDs) are known to offer good service. As long as your data's backed up, it may be better to go for these brands.
