Why Apple chose ATI over Nvidia for Macinteltoshes

Skilled
conspiracy about why Apple chose ATI over Nvidia for its Intel Mac launch. Apple made a rather simple decision what to put in its new iMac/iBook machines.

It chose M56 based Mobility Radeon X1600 simply because it was available and it could guarantee that ATI could ship those chips in quantity, time. Of course it also had to like the GPU and its design.

Apple has been well known for being rather disloyal to the graphic companies and always chose the best product available. The iMac was originally launched with Nvidia's Geforce FX5200, then it migrated to ATI's Radeon 9600/X600 and now again it is using Radeon X1600.

Apple evaluated the G73 based Geforce 7600 chips but Nvidia could not get those on time. I believe that G73 is probably going to end up faster than M56 but it is too late now as the decision and the notebook/desktop design has been made. The machines are out and selling with ATI X1600 chips only. Nvidia has to wait for the product refresh cycle and it's certainly going to take some time before that happens.

This is definitely going to fix ATI's sales numbers for the next few quarters as it will boost its mobile and desktop chip sales. A few months back, Apple also wanted to use R520 chips for its Power Macs but it decided to go for Nvidia G70GL chips as it could not get the R520s on time. In 20-inch iMac machines you have the option to choose between 128MB or 256MB Radeon X1600 cards, and this card now features DVI out. It was about time, guys.

Desktop machines are already available and shipping and that makes them the world's first Core Duo products in the market. The machines use Intel's well known Yonah CPUs based on Pentium M design with two cores in one chip.

Intel has to be happy as Jobs claims it wants to move to Intel only by the end of the year. I just hope that poor IBM won't end up making NV30s for graphic manufacturers. This is Nvidia's second big loss to ATI in the last quarter, as only ATI has the Intel chipset division as a huge customer but now has Ipod loving Apple on its customer exclusive list. It is at least exclusive for the new iMacs and new iBooks.

You can buy those machines on the Apple site. We won't dignify Apple by giving it a direct link.
