I m using WIN XP with SP2 with almost all the updates along with WIN 98 as dual booting system. My net connection is BSNL Dataone.

Machine Config : P4 1.7 ghz, 256 MB RAM.

I can use the internet through dial up thing, however i cant go to the configuration page of the modem (192.168.1.1). It shows error message as page not found (the one we normally get while browsing). I will appreciate if someone helps me find out why i cant configure the modem.

^ Open a command prompt, and check if you're able to ping 192.168.1.1 . If you aren't, you probably havent configured your IP add/subdomain correctly.

If you could tell us the Brand/Model Number of the modem/router it would help. Some routers tend to stay away from the usual default 192.168.1.x .

Also in order to access the web configuration page of the modem/router you need to be in the same subnet as that of the modem/router.

That is say your router IP is 192.168.1.1,for you to access it you need to be in 192.168.1.x range.

Ah i should have mentioned that i recently reinstalled my whole systel from scratch. And before doing so, the modem was accessible through that address. Well indeed i have not set any network info like ip or dsn or subnet mask, mainly coz the bsnl allowed to connect without doing so. Would be glad if some1 helps me to configure the network properties.

YEEEEEEEAAAA finally i made it thanks to u guys. Well, i was missing to put those ip / dns etc in network properties (bah how dumb of me).

No you dont have to be in the 192.X.X.X range for that.
You can have any IP and you would still be able to access the default gateway (i.e. 192.168.1.1 or whatever applicable) of the modem/router.

^He is right.I've working on cisco/linksys/netgear wireless gear for too long I guess :p Thanks for pointing out that mate.Much appreciated
