CPU/Mobo Why do people remove IHS ??

Ok, Ill Explain.

The IHS, sometimes does not have proper contact, with the components inside, you can find that out, with Unexpected High Temperatures.

So, people remove the IHS, and have the HeatSink contact the Core itself. So theres much better Thermal Conductivity. Even if the IHS, is in proper contact. Removing it, reduces the Temperature quit a bit.

BUT, its hard to remove the IHS, with the New AMD 64 Chips.

It was very easy in the Bartons and old Athlons. :).

Hope that answers your question well :).

When did Bartons [Athlon XP] and old Athlons have IHS ?

And what are the benefits ?

I mean why doesn't everybody remove thier IHS then ??

Voids the warranty for starters ,might scrap off the core a bit resulting in a dead CPU...lot of possibilities for screw ups..

there was no IHS in the older bartons and athlon chips

The Core is pretty frgaile... Welll i did manage to damage one on my T Birds in the old days i still remember :P... Thats the main reasone... Also remvoing on Dual Cores maybe a good idea but not on a single core :)...

^^ C'mon don't flame him for that...:P

@ Emmett Brown - Thanks for the informative pictures :D

I got the idea and if anybody does intend to remove their IHS do post a pic sometime :P

Not really, most of the guys at XS are very very ethical people!

If they screw their hardware while OC'ing / Modding it, they do not try to cover up and send it in for RMA.. they shell out the cash and buy new parts. This behaviour extends to even their more expensive hardware like FX processors! OTOH, most of them there are rich enough to afford it :P

Peepz take IHS off so that the "poor contact" hence the heat issue taken care of resulting in few more MHz. As far as I have seen only extreme overclockers do so...
I wanted to try it but then Darky asked me to practice a lil;) . So now its going to be the office Sempron 2600 to acquire some skill :hap2:

Last I read from that thread, he only returned the PSU for RMA and they did offer to give him a replacement (which seems fine, since the unit did malfunction). I dont think he tried RMA'ing the rest of the parts, and couldnt either since they had been modded.

What he was looking for though, was some form of insurance provided by PC P&C covering the parts connected to the PSU.
