Why does the rest of the world have cheap internet access?

HIGH SPEED.....
Broadband Internet access via TV cables can reach 100 megabits per second as early as next year, 50 times faster than the average broadband speeds now offered to cable TV homes ...... the cost of connecting a home with the new ethernet-to-the-home technology can vary between 50 euros ($60.28 ) and 200 euros ($241).

LOW PRICE......
PHILADELPHIA - Telephone and cable TV companies are slashing broadband prices and boosting connection speeds as the two monopoly-prone industries prepare to lock horns on multiple fronts.

Comcast Corp. fired the latest shot in the battle this week by announcing plans to boost the speed of its entry-level cable broadband service to 6 megabits per second — as much as four times faster than a typical DSL connection over a phone line.

That move follows a series of promotions which have lowered introductory rates for a high-speed Internet line to between $15 and $30 a month, down from the typical $30 and $45 a month.

God bless America!India sucks!

You do realise India has much more fundamental issues to deal with before devoting considerable resources to internet connectivity?

We didn't have the luxury of starting from a clean drawboard like America (means a LOT for laying an efficient infrastrucure).
Also neither are we small enough like most of the other nations nor do we enjoy a slim population density.

Around 7% even own pc's here, don't think the govt. sees enough sense in putting communications before ration.

The main problem is infrastructure and govt control over it.
Open the gateways to private sector completely and see what happens. Currently as per the contract with BSNL govt will gradually reduce the BSNL monopoly over communication sector but in steps.
The new contract with singapore is already done regarding extra communication link and bandwidth.
Just wait for a while. It will be here. It has to come here to support our growing economy. And it will in a while.

completely agree with funky.
it will be here for sure but god only knows when.
we've been waiting for many years now.

of course it'll come here too, but in what manner and when ? who is gonna get 2-5 mbps connection when they'll all put data caps and time limit on them, just like they're doing now even with speeds that have actually been ruled out of BB.

Bandwidth expansion of such magnitudes will take time. But the change is visible already. 256kbps connects are now a bit more common than they were earlier. Download caps are vanishing slowly. Take for instance Airtel, which has been providing unlimited 128k lines for over a year now. I choose to mention airtel alone since i find their service very reliable. The presence of such an ISP, providing reliable service with a decent plan, is kind of uplifting. Keeps my hopes up. I can be sure that in a year or two, i will be able to get for myself a 512k unlimited line, ATLEAST, at a reasonable price. Thats a considerable improvement.
