Been ages since we had new blockbuster plans from any of the service providers ... What's going on ? I thought the TRAI had big plans for giving us better, cheaper, faster internet ?

TRAI, India’s telecom regulator, has issued a series of draft proposals in an attempt to boost broadband investment. Chief among these is that the USO (universal service obligation) fund, to which Indian operators contribute 5 percent of their annual revenue, be used to subsidize satellite backhaul charges by up to 40 percent when providing broadband links to rural areas.

According to local press reports, there is more than US$2 billion in India’s USO fund, making it one of the largest funds of its kind in developing economies.

In an attempt to boost broadband investment in urban areas, the TRAI recommends that state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL should be “encouraged” to appoint franchisees for providing DSL-based services to supplement their broadband efforts. TRAI says that BSNL and MTNL should have “total flexibility” in developing commercial models with their partners.

In addition, TRAI urges the government to encourage Indian manufacturers to produce more DSL-based CPEs, based on standards developed by India’s TEC (Telecommunications Engineering Center). TEC’s work on DSL CPE standardization, says TRAI, should start “immediately.” Moreover, says TRAI, the government should mandate MDUs (multiple dwelling units) to be “broadband ready” through the installation of the necessary internal wiring.

I've been on airtel 256 kbps for abt one and a half years now, and i think sandeep, nikhil and rio for more than two. Price has remained the same @ 999. Very disappointed right now as i was expecting a decent 512k plan as a minimum upgrade by 2007. At this rate it looks like it might not even happen in 2008 :S

just my two cents..

i guess a majority of the customers of these ISP's arent heavy downloaders and use the internet for pretty basic stuff..ive rarely seen any of my older relatives or cousins complaining nowadays about the speed of the internet..they are always not satisfied with the speed of their old computers but with internet everyone i know of seems satisfied with the speed..its only a small percentage of people like us on te and other forums who really crave for more speed.

The New York Times just took a peek into the world of Japanese fiber-optic broadband, which we all know is much faster and cheaper than ours. While we here in the States might view the Japanese broadband market as some utopia where entire HD movies can be downloaded in seconds, it's not quite that simple.

It seems that NTT, the biggest fiber provider in Japan, has a lot of the same issues Verizon does here: they need to get permission from landlords to hook buildings up with fiber, and once they do they still need to convince people to sign up for it. And after all the big apartment and condo buildings are hooked up, they're stuck doing individual houses.

Overall, setting up a fiber optic network is a very expensive prospect with no real guarantees to making all that money back. Without a lot of current applications that utilize such crazy speeds, there just isn't a big enough demand to justify the expense. So why does Japan throw caution to the wind and spend all sorts of cash to set up this speedy network even though it might not be the most fiscally responsible thing to do in the world?

Well, one of the big reasons is that the Japanese government provides tax incentives for companies to do so, while our government has done basically nothing to encourage a nationwide fiber network. Despite the fact that setting up a completely new wired infrastructure is an incredibly expensive undertaking (just ask Verizon), companies in America are supposed to do it all themselves and make it profitable, something that might not make sense with this situation.

Matteo Bortesi, a technology consultant at Accenture in Tokyo, said that "the Japanese think long-term. If they think they will benefit in 100 years, they will invest for their grandkids. There's a bit of national pride we don't see in the West." I'm pretty sure there's more to it than just national pride and wanting to be first, but there's certainly something to be said for setting up a network now that we'll need in a few years. Chances are, eventually we'll have a nice, fast, cheap, nationwide fiber network that will allow us to download porn faster than we could ever have imagined before, but at the rate we're going, it's going to be awhile.

bsnl right now is busy in providing iptv,,, check d DTH forum for more details,,

N to tell u d truth,, if bsnl wud increase d night unlimited from 9 AT night to 9 in mornin, most wud be satisfied,,,

as we go higher in d speed chain, d no. of users keep declining,, so for dese psu's low speed n more clients is very beneficial...
