Why Made in China ?

Headstart and cheap labor, what else.
Forgot one more thing, China also holds over 90% of rare earth minerals required in the production of electronic components, so there's that too.

That's where assembly lines come in, one person does only one task for which they are given basic training. There's a scene in Samsara where one person tightens the same screw on the product which he gladly might be doing for 12 hours a day for the amount of $150 per month. There are plenty of documentaries on Chinese worker exploitation on youtube especially related to Foxconn, Quanta, etc

Thing is they already have an established co-dependent industry and all components are produced locally which can be sourced by manufacturers without delays and problems, no matter what you do you can never match their efficiency or cost in electronics at least.

Whatever our govt. is doing now with the Make in India campaign, the Chinese already did that 20 years ago.

The one thing that I really like about the Chinese is that they don't have a religion per se. They follow the teachings of philosophers rather and I find that to be a very strong point in their favor.

They got the first mover advantage. Also, labour is cheap.

The entire process is all about outsourcing - You have to pay 8$ per hour minimum wage in US, give all sorts of security/work hours/etc. Now, for about the same rate, you can get 10 workers there, an efficient supply chain.

The key reason behind china's success in such areas is practically non-existent labour rights and laws that protect them. They have a dictatorial rule under the guise of a communist govt (All communist govts are dictatorships in any case). Everybody is made to work whether its for a pittance or even for free (in labour camps).

In china, people may be forced to work for 20 hours per day. In foxconn factories, people working on iPhones cannot stop working till a bell is rung no matter how long that may be. Often people are made to work continuously for two days in a stretch.

This is why "Make in India" is never going to succeed. In order for that to succeed, the Govt needs to methodically kill labour rights and laws. While the Modi govt seem to be taking steps in that direction, it is obviously being met with a lot of resistance. Labour in India has unions associated with political parties and can afford to be lazy or ditch work at the drop of a pin even alone the opposite situation that is present in India That sort of thing is suicidal for such initiatives.
