Graphic Cards Why Not Flash to an ASUS Bios?

Hi all,

A few days back I asked people on some other forums whether it would be beneficial for me to flash my XFX 6600GT AGP Bios with an ASUS Bios.
Many reported that there wont be any benefits.
I have some confusions:
I would like to link u people to this link

http://event.asus.com/vga_newfeatures/index.htm
http://event.asus.com/vga_newfeatures/gaming.htm

I guess they are just software or propeitary Asus Driver enhancements. I guess these software at least the OSD menu & game face Live to work if I flash my cardt to an ASUS Bios

What do u pals out there think?
Pliz share your comments>>Or better the gurus may try it out pliz so that noobs like us can follow.

U might land up with a dead card if you try to flash to an asus bios since it might not be the exactly same reference design as xfx. those features are gimmicks. asus bundles a webcam and crap with its card along with some software for streaming video.

Hey ,

Well I hope that u have gone throug the links which I have given in my 1st post.
Well My friend has an Asus 6600GT AGP & he has used the enhanced drivers , & yes as the asus site mentions the video quality are better than at least than my XFX or many other 6600GTs I have seen like Gigabyte & Gainward

My main intention is to use the OSD menu software & the Game Face Live software through which i can record my games directly to MPEG4.The video enhancement software is just a driver enhancement I know. So when I can put that to use so why not use that. And about hogging resources all of us now a days have quite powerful PCs & almost 1 GB of RAM, so while watching videos I guess we would not mind if the CPU utilization goes up a bit.

I just wanted to know if the ASUS Bios Rev 02 from their site will work on my XFX card or not. I am quite a noob , so feeling a bit panicky to flash my card.

Hope guys out there help me out

Its not a matter of simply flashing to another BIOS to open up these "enhancements". BIOS'es cannot be looked upon as "drivers" that you can simply experiment with different "versions".

The core hardware of your card revolves around your BIOS. An XFX hardware design in most probability does not match an Asus design (there are even cards from the same manufacturer which do not have matching BIOS'es). In simple words, an incompatible BIOS would not be able to interface with the hardware on your graphics card - if it cant interface with it, your card simply wont run! Restoring it is a pretty hectic task unless you have a backup PCI graphics card (not PCI Express).

You could try downloading Asus' drivers and their software and see if it runs on your system without any modifications at all.
Else, I think there are methods to change your manufacturer/model string as recognised by Windows, thereby you could fool windows into thinking you have an Asus card and acordingly the drivers need not give as much trouble.

CAn u tell me how this can be done?

Hope that helps

i wish it was that easy. but there is much more, since the driver checks for system_id and subsystem_id which are in the BIOS for the manufacturer. Since its a 6600GT to a 6600GT that will not be too much of a problem. But vendor id is also in BIOS. That would not be so easy to get away it. Also The quality of the ASUS video card is not due to the drivers, but a far superior quality of RAMDAC which is now external to the graphic core. Why do you think the ASUS cards are more expensive. The RAMDAC cost almost 10 to 25 USD more on the ASUS Card

Vendor id can be wasily bypassed using nvflash 4.42.
Its a lot more difficult on newer versions of nvflash.
And th XFX and ASUS bother are 100% reference design as far as the card goes. There is no advantage of flashing it to the ASUS bios. Rather flash to gainward or gigabyte bios. For some odd reason the gainward and gigabyte bios overclocks more than others.
Anyway those extra softwares are useless crap. The vivid colour is similar to that of digital vibrance. Only postprocessing in software.

Hey funkeymonkey,

Well the Splendid softaware may seem useless to you. But my friend has an ASUS 6600GT card AGP & using this software the jump in video quality in DVDs is quite visible.
Leave alone Splendid , then there is the OSD menu software through which u can change brightness , contast , gamma , etc directly through the press a hotkey.
& if u can also leave that , many of us almost use fraps to record video. Now with their software u can recoed directly to MPEG 4 of course if u have a processor of Intel 2.8Ghz or above or an Athlon 54 2800+ or better. The fraps files become huge , so if u have a fst procccy why not use the software.

As of nvflash , the newest version 5 can also flash if the board & system id mismatch.
If the flash works propoerly , I think there should be no problem with the wroking of the software.

& Lastly Who doesn't want to relabel to an ASUS card.
& bout the RAM DAC , I think there's no relation to the software with those , & even with the flash as all 6600GT RAMDACs are same PLL (phase Locked Loop) clock driven.

I would specially like any expert modder who has a backup PCI card to try this out.I dont have a backup PCI card at present , so have to try it out later. If required I can supply the required BIOS of ASUS.

If anyone carrier out this flash he can reap the advantages though with a slight increse in the hogging of resources. But who cares , even antivirus which are useless craps are hogging resources on everyones desktop?

The RAMDAC also contains the color tables, not the PLL might be the same, for the clock generator, its its the color table which is different. that is what i mean.

Sorry I misunderstood
So u r meaning that its the RAMDAC thats ASUS is using for thier splendid technology(may be just a marketing PR)
I guess its not related to DACs, just post processing using the DVC 3.0 & may be even purevideo filters.
Why not use them if we can fro free?

all that can be done by using NVIDIA default drivers.
Have you used digital vibrance at all? It makes DVD looks a lot better.
And try flashing with NVFLASH 5. The board id mismatch and vendor id mismatch bypassing did not work for me. Try it yourself, some people have reported that it works for them. For some it dosent. NVFLASH 4.42 can bypass any mismatch thats why i recommanded it.
Also whatever software you use the game recording slows down the game to almost unplayable speeds. and there is a freeware alternative to fraps to record video named taksi. It can use any codec installed on your system. Give it a try. :)
