Tomb Raider
Naked patches have existed long before gamers got inspired to liberate Ms. Croft from her clothing, but this is probably the best known example of naughty business in games. The source of all of this probably comes from the rumored Nude Raider mod, which never existed. But it didn't take long before someone made their own naked version of Lara and her two friends. Now you can get a skin for virtually every Tomb Raider game released on the PC.
Half-Life 2
Well, no points for guessing who gets the treatment in Valve's shooter classic. Much as we'd like to please the small but devout following of gamers who want to see Gordon without that suit, the vast majority actually want to see Alyx naked. A current disagreement with Steam means that there is no vouching in this article for any impressive physics on the newly-exposed regions, but it will give you something to look at while she starts another one of her long narratives.
No One Lives Forever
Ah, Kate Archer. She is Bond with more sass and Austin Powers without the teeth. And unless you believe the Metroid fanboys, she's the first lady of first person shooters. She's also naked in the cut scenes if you grab the nude skin. In fact, Kate seems to accessorize her nudity, but what is a secret agent if not stylish? Sadly the skins are a bit poor, so it does her no justice.
The Sims 2
Even the first Sims game had nude skins, but the Sims 2 ones are far more detailed and more proportionally correct. Why should that matter? Well, no-one likes looking at ugly naked things, even in games. The Sims community caters to all tastes and there are also male nude skins available. Since we're on the topic, The Sims strikes much closer to the GTA scandal than you might think - Maxis' series also has community patches that remove the pixilation over nude Sims. And there are plenty of patches that let you watch your Sims have sex.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
How did the moral watchdogs miss this one? The original version of Giants features the nymph Delphi strutting around topless. It also had a small Scottish alien saying "B*||s!" The game's publishers stepped in and the offending bits were neatly covered up. Only, though, as long as you didn't install the Blood patch, which turned the game's blood color back to the traditional red and, as a bonus, showed us Delphi's assets. The b*||s bit is there, regardless.
Neverwinter Nights
Well, when you think about it, what would an RPG be without some nudity? Clearly several fans of Bioware's Neverwinter Nights thought the same way and quite a few nude skins have surfaced. But when you think about it, female fantasy characters are generally semi-nude while their male counterparts have enough armor on to put the entire Crusades to shame. So the step is really a small one. Of course, marching around naked in an RPG would be foolish.
Duke Nukem 3D
"Shake it, baby!" Duke Nukem 3D already had the strippers - and it didn't take much game play effort to see them do the job you were paying them to do. But, alas, some extensive searching didn't confirm the existence of this patch. What is out there, though, are a few patches that make things seriously raunchy. In fact, Penthouse was involved with one of the mods.
Dead Or Alive 2
Once upon a time there was a small company called Westside that made and released a modification that turned some of the characters in Dead or Alive 2 into nude combatants. But to the detriment of horny teenagers everywhere, Tecmo sued the company and won, so the modification disappeared. Ironic when you look at Dead or Alive Volleyball, which is as close to nude as the word damn is to a cuss.
Max Payne 2
This doesn't even require a mod. Remedy, while making the sequel, obviously had a little time to kill and created a nude skin for the female lead Mona Sax. Actually it's not all that dubious: it's the skin used for her model in the shower scene. But it's not hard to change to the skin in the game, though you might lose your guns - not something you want to happen in Max Payne. Besides, the man has enough on his mind, doesn't he?
World Of Warcraft
To be honest, it's hard not to find nude skins for a lot of the MMOGs on the web, but this recent entry for the hottest thing online since the killer rabbit in Everquest is probably most apt. And just in case you need to see it without a subscription, a few WOW players even made a video of it showing some of the WOW lasses getting it on.
Conclusion
For the mass-public, GTA's sex-act mod represents the advent of a potentially new - and according to Hillary Clinton, dangerous - path in the gaming biz. But, of course, we in the gaming community know that that there are many stimulating game mods out there already, including what we detail here. Don't tell Hillary Clinton and the mainstream media, though.
