In the olden days the prices of Pen(USB) drives usually fall by half every 6-8 months and you will be able to get hold of a Pen(USB) drive with a double storage capacity every 6-8 months at the same price point. :bleh:

But for the last 2 years the prices of a Pen(USB) drives is remaining stagnant unlike the olden days and for example, a 4 GB one was having a price of Rs.400-450 for the last 1.5-2 years.

Any reason behind this peculiar phenomenon ?:@

according to me these may be the reasons:

* the storage sweet spot is stagnant.. like 128 to 256, 256 to 512, 512 to etc were great jumps in terms of storage but the 4GB capacity is quite enough for the uses of the flash drive

* portable hard drives are shouldering the responsibility of storing huge files nicely at a good price point

* for every damn competition in the world and for gifting nowadays you get a pen drive lol

* flash drives are more reliable these days so ppl are sticking with what they have for longer

* the above reasons are stagnating the demand for higher capacity pen drives

ahh!! too much time in my hands :P

Maybe to differentiate between the Chinese & Original, though everything is either made in china or assembled in china.

Flash memory prices. There haven't been too many breakthroughs in the technology lately to bring forth a drop in price.

Perfect Answer. Also the SLC process is nearly dead. Which is another reason for some major Flash chip makers to claim shortages, which drove up the prices. Remember, 8GB drives had gone down to as much as Rs 600-700 ta couple of months back, and as of now they stand at around 900-1000 for good drives. And as someone mentioned, the storage sweet spot has been hit. Most people don't even fully use their 4GB drives, so higher capacities are not much in demand.

flash pen drive prices may start falling by the end of this year.. as usb 3.0 will come into production.. :D

but then ul be getting outdated stuff @ a cheaper price..!!

True, but still people will be less bothered about the 3.0 ver. BTW who is gonna install mini OS on a usb 3.0?:P
& 2.0 isnt bad after all. So atleast i wouldn't mind getting a 2.0 16gb if its price fall within 1.5k:D

But the portable HDD prices are falling ?

I heard that new SSD drives are consuming a large amount of Silicone wafer to produce flash chips. So RAM and pen drive manufacturers are shifting their sights towards SSD.
