Why to do SAP?

I am interested in SAP, but am not sure exactly what it is. I tried to check online and found out that there are many sub-categories (or something like that). I have already decided to go to a SAP center for counseling on Saturday but it would help if I knew beforehand what exactly it is. If anyone is doing a course or know what it is, please help.

Also, what types of job can I get once I complete the course? What is the standard salary like? Please tell me more if I ought to know!

What is SAP?
In simple terms, SAP is a business management software that was developed by a German company (in 1992) that goes by the same name - SAP AG. The software is correctly pronounced as an abbreviation - S.A.P. and not as a word 'sap'. Like Oracle Financials, JD Edwards, Peoplesoft and many others, SAP too is an ERP.

ERP, which is an abbreviation for Enterprise Resource Planning, is principally an integration of business management practices and modern technology. Information Technology (IT) integrates with the core business processes of a corporate house to streamline and accomplish specific business objectives.

The software comes as a base product with generic business processes. These have to be customized as per client's needs.

What kind of jobs?
SAP specialists are generally referred to as Consultants.
SAP has 3 basic roles -
Technical - A person who writes programs/reports etc.
Basis/Security - System Administrators.
Functional - A person who interacts with the client, gathers the requirements and convert them in a suitable form for technical team. This role requires Domain specialization - for eg CA opt for finance domain, someone working with manufacturing industry opts for Materials Management (MM) whereas someone having a Sales experience can become a Sales/Distribution(SD) consultant.

Hope this clarifies some doubts.

SAP consultants get handsomely paid,if they are good..but training will cost a bomb almost 2lacs

If you're a fresher, it'll be better to join a company and let them train you in-house. I've known people who spend a bomb (Lakhs) on training with "guaranteed placements" and finding themselves without employment in the field for 1 year.

If you are adament on doing a "training", then be sure to talk with some people from their earlier batches and find out how good the placement cell is. Without a good placement cell, you might as well sit at home with a PC, and learn some open source CRM (Sugar, etc).

SAP is nothing but ERP system implementation.

I was hired by a company as they had to implement some erp application in their network worth some lacs of rupees. It would have been a valuable learning experience for me but after my my selection in 2 rounds, 10 days, i simply asked them whether they will be providing me a hands-on training for the same and they simply said you have shown us your complete confidence for the same and we wont be providing any such training. I was like

??? are they joking?

Still i asked them are they planning to implement a SAP or Tally erp, they replied they havent decided yet and will only do so after some months.

Crazy managers.

How can they expect anyone from IT field simply implement without any knowledge? Confidence is of utmost importance but then knowledge comes first.

Still can anybody list down all or the most common ERPs used in corporates.
