Hello i have a desktop, an iphone and a 1TB WD MY book essential external hard drive..Also plan to get a ps3 and an Xtreamer. So i plan to share my net connection between my dessktop, ps3 and my iphone. Also plan on streaming HD vds/movies to Xtreamer or ps3 and if that's not possible atleast wirelessly transferring my vids to my 1Tb ext HDD connected to my Xtreamer.Which wifi router should i go for and what will be the cost ??Range is not an issue since all these equipments will be in one room.

Ideally would like a router under 5 k if possible.Should be easy to setup, reliable and long lasting.Don't care for custom firmwares like tomatoes, etc, etc.Just want a reliable, easy to setup unit that doesn't cost a bomb and capable of giving good performance.

Also my desktop doesn't have wifi.So which usb wifi dongle would you suggest to enable me to stream hd vidz/transfer data to xtreamer ??

earlier i planned to go for a Linksys WRT54G2 router but that doesn't let you transfer data.So which one should i go for? Pls. suggest a few models so that if one is not available i can go for the other.

Where did you read/hear that the WRT54G2 doesn't let you transfer data?! Any router will let you transfer data. I guess your main issue is the speed at which data will get transferred over the wireless network, which is where pretty much any G series router will hit a roadblock. Ideally, for video streaming or copying large files over the wireless network, you should be looking at an N series router. The only one I can think of in your budget is the WRT160N from Linksys. If you can stretch your budget by 1-2k, you have better options like the WRT320N. I'm sure there will be tons of other options from other vendors too. Of course, getting the router isn't the end of it. You'll also need the wireless devices to have N series wireless adapters in order to take advantage of the router. Not too sure about the wireless adapters for the PS3 and Xtreamer. Your PC will also need a wireless N USB adapter. The simpler option would be to have the PC hardwired to the router, since you mentioned that everything would be in the same room anyway.

thx a ton for that info.Repped ya. any idea on the price of linksys WRT160N or WRT320N ? Also can a g- series router like WRT54G2 transfer(not stream) 9 GB files from computer HDD to 1TB WD ext. HHD connected to xtreamer ?? My purpose will be served even if it's able to tranfster these large files to the ext. HDD for playback on my tv.

The WRT160N is approx 5k and the WRT320N goes to around 7k. I'm not 100% sure about the pricing, but it should be around that range.

You will be able to transfer your music/movies to you external hard drive, but like I mentioned earlier, on the WRT54G2, it'll take a long time because of the speed limitations of wireless G.

thx again.... few more questions:-

Is there any advantage having dual band n series routers over oridinary n series routers in my case? I mean i plan to connect iphone ( g router) as well as xtreamer(n series)? So will having dual band router be helpful in my case?

Also if i connect my desktop to my wifi router will i need a seperate n series wifi dongle for my desktop to transfer vids to xtreamer ?? if so which one should i go for?

And finally what abt. other n series routers from companies like belkin? are they good? eg. Belkin N Wireless Router (F5D8233AK4) for Rs.3275/- or other routers??

thx in advance!

dual band router are advantageous in case there are a lot of wifi users but if wifi users are not that many you can go for single band too... dual band besides 2.4GHz also transmit at 5GHz so in case too many 2.4 Ghz users will result in poor quality service due to interference or superimposition of radio waves.... at least one will prevent you connection from dropping buying a G router right now does not make sense ... the other day saw a linksys single band N router for 3k + odd... do not buy G router sometimes i feel like breaking my wireless router as xfer fall down to 512Kbps normally they are at 1.5 to 2.2 Kbps... a pain when i xfer files to my NAS i prefer copying on pendrive and taking it to my main rig where actually NAS is connected via wired connection...

one more suggestion if you can afford which i am guessing you can buy one which 1 Gbps wired ports... never know will come handy when dumping few TB's to you computer...

Peace

Even amongst dual band routers, you've got two types of dual band routers. Simultaneous Dual Band and Dual Band. Simultaneous dual band routers transmit on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band at the same time, whereas dual band routers work on either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz at a time. Simultaneous dual band routers would obviously make more sense. Also, the 5Ghz band generally has lesser range than the 2.4Ghz band. Not to mention, you'll also need dual band adapters!

ok my final question:-

if i connect my desktop to my wifi router will i need a seperate n series wifi dongle for my desktop to transfer vids to xtreamer ?? if so which one should i go for?(sounds like a silly question but would still like to know)

no need of n-series wifi dongle ... as data will go from your PC to router via cable and from router to xtreamer via wifi :)
