Hi ppl,

I am planning to buy a 32" lcd tv. My budget is upto 40k. My purpose is watching tv and ocassionally connect my laptop to enjoy a movie. I have shortlisted these models..

Samsung

Samsung LA32B530

Samsung LA32B550

SONY

Sony KLV32V550

Sony KLV32W550A

Does any one know the latest prices of these in mumbai ? I am planning to get it in on EMI. Which place would be best ? Vijay Sales ? or ezone ?

I heard from a samsung serviceman who had recently come to repair our 21" lcd at office that he would prefer sony over samsung :)

Please suggest any other models.

1.Best option will be going on and checking ALL of them personally and making a decision based on that.but i have a strong sense the Sony V series is better for SD viewing as compared to Samsung 5 series.

2.There is a Samsung 6 series 32 incher for sale here at TE within ur budget,Uc an try that if interested.

3.Not sure, but a service personnel here told me Sony doesn't help much with panel repair and pushes for panel replacement(yes, a costly process) whereas u can get a Samsung panel repaired easily and for less than 1/3rd the price of a panel change.

Thanks ! that was quick...
yes indeed getting a lcd tv repaired is a costly affair. But I heard they don't conk off easily.

Sony plays on their brand name and charges much more for what they actually offer, i'd stick with Samsung/lg, get sony if u want "BRAVIA" over-hyped shit.

I am all for samsung. I've had a samsung 26" for ~4yrs now... Still awesome!

I had done extensive testing on sony vs samsung vs LG and felt Samsung had the best pic quality + wasn't as expensive as sony... ( but that's just my opinion based on models in 2006 :)... best to select a couple of models, carry your own dvd/laptop etc & see the results before parting with money)

lcd panels cannot be repaired irrespective of the manufacturer be it samsung/lg or sony, they all replace it.

well in order to create a brand image as big as sony u will need good products, sonyn were the best in CRT business, they are very competitve performance wise in lcds, some models like 46X450A serie and above are still the lcds to beat in india.they are of course far from competitve when it comes to price especialy in india, since sony is a direct import which is subjected to around 35% of import duties, where as the samsung and lg are assembled in india hence they get a tax break, their lcds are only taxed at 5%.
also if u think sony is making huge profits in their lcd business u are so wrong, sony are currently posting historical losses more then US 1$ billion first time since opening of the company, most of the losses are from sony playstation business and their lcd business.sony hopes to make profit or get even in 2011 and above.
bravia is far from shit, even with the higher retail price they still are no3 overall in sales worldwide after samsung and lg ,they were no1 in 06 in sales and no2 in 07/08.so i don't think brand plays much of a role here, its all about performance.
just like plasma they are far cheaper then lcds, yet are dying.

^^Agreed....still you must accept the fact that sony's are expensive than other brands, and we are not talking about 1, 2 or 5k here....Big differences! For Eg. my friend got a LG 42" 200Hz LCD for 66500, while the sony 40" 50Hz LCD costs 67500....the sony 100hz range starts from 93900.....

now thats a huge margin. If sony is making losses in LCD business, its not the consumer's concern. should consumers buy expensive products just so that the company would stay in business?

coming back to topic, under any case i would not recommend a sony LCD, the benefit it provides above other TVs priced considerably cheaper than it are almost irrelevant.

Moreover, the matter is quite subjective as everyone's preferences are different, i suggest you go to different showrooms, look at the models available and buy one that suits you the best. go to brand showrooms, as you will get to see the complete range, take prices and check up places like vijay sales and ezone and buy from wherever its the cheapest.

Well since u are spending so much on buying a televison i would suggest u to go for sony.sony viera it have a hdmi port,u can connect with your pc also and about quality just go to the shop and just watch the difference.sit there take a glance of sony and samsung u can fill the difference.

My favorite brand is Samsung, bz they offer best for u'r R$
ASIK, many shops adjust TV settings(basically colors) so that they can get better sales on the favorite brands.
And also AFIK :D, in Reliance Digital zone, it seems they can arrange the TV's which u have selected side by side and they give u remote; so that u can adjust the settings u'rself and make decision

I own a Samsung LA32B530,its a very goo LCD

movies in HD are awesome

Sound is good

compare your self with other tv interms of picture contrast, brightness how you like the picture

ask showroom guy to put cable tv or dth not a demo HD video

Sony had a fair market share before samsung took over, especially in India. You guys are right, Sony products are far more expensive i guess due to the taxes and imports they have to pay to get here. I think i'll go with samsung, I have a sammy washing machine which works gr8 even after 3 years !

Any one who recently got a new screen might have all the data. Can you please share the latest models along with price of samsung or sony ?

Thanks ..

well like i said before the sony is subjected to higher taxes, offcourse its their fault that they don't have a assembly plant in india.
u can't compare a lg 200hz with a sony, the LG doesn't even come close to the performance of the sony or samsung .infact for eg in the 32" if u compare a LG with 100hz vs the philips 5609 which is a 50hz the philips is still better in every aspect compared to the LG model be it SD performance, black levels, motion etc both are priced the same.

now thats a huge margin. If sony is making losses in LCD business, its not the consumer's concern. should consumers buy expensive products just so that the company would stay in business?
no one here is forcing anyone to buy from any brand or model.

the sonys V550A can be had for 43k in showroom or 36k in grey market,no idea about the W550A.
the samsung B550A costs about 38k to 39k.

for under 34k the philips 5609 is good, the samsung and sony has better blacks .the philips also applies by default slight sharpning to the image which is undefeatable sadly,it also lacks the backlight control .the sony is worth if u buy it in the grey market.

What about comp warranty or servicing if we buy in grey mkt?

well no warranty but they will do paid service ,which anyway irrespective of the brand is pricey.

I think no point in buying expensive electronics from gray mkt..You never know with electronics, anything can go wrong and no one to catch hold of !
But I personally prefer buying electronics from gulf especially Dubai ! People say the good old days when only the original was sold in gulf are over especially in dubai but I still notice anything from chocolate to high end electronics, gadgets bought from there have a superior quality.
Any body to add on this ? :)

An out of topic question, How much diff the price will from grey mkt to getting this from outside like Singapore.

the price difference varies from model to model and sizes, but u can expect about 10% to 25% difference.
a 40" S series is available for about 44k in SE asia but about 55k+ in the grey market.

Joint venture by Sony and Panasonic? :P
Anyway, the premium charged by Sony isn't quite easy on the wallet but hey, you are getting your money's worth. Even the entry level models from their LCD lineup offer decent performance.

If you want something cheaper, there are other brands to choose from... ;)
