my current setup is a ut starcom modem wa-3002g1 connected to a belkin wifi router connected via ethernet to my desktop pc with win 7 64-bit OS and everything on this setup works fine

now the modem is from mtnl and since they have now started charging modem rental i thought of getting my own. a friend gave me his beetel adsl2+ 450bx1 modem w/wifi router. i set it up on my laptop (which has win xp OS) and tried it out and it worked fine. then when i brought it to my desktop where i would like to keep it connected via ethernet but it failed to recognise and would just show as unplugged. i tried diff. cables which worked properly with my laptop but it wouldnt work with my pc.

i googled the issue and checked drivers etc which were updated.

then i changed the speed/duplex settings of my pc's NIC which is a inbuilt Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller to 10mbps full duplex and voila, it recognised and started working. it would again go back to showing as unplugged if i chose auto negotiation or 100mbps full duplex. but it would connect properly via wifi. i read somewhere that turning off pc's power for a while also has helped some people with a similar issue but it didnt help me here.

now after many hours of frustration i'm about to give up on it. i can buy the mtnl for 600bucks and this hasnt been worth the effort at all but now it feels like a puzzle which i should solve. by method of elimination it seems like a win 7/NIC issue. any suggestions/solutions, fellas?

also, if i were to keep the beetel connected to my desktop via wifi (its inbuilt in the pc and i now keep the wifi radio off) what are the downsides other than the added power consumption of the pc's wifi radio being on ? any drop in network speed? i use the pc to stream 720p media to my ps3 so will that performance get affected (i am assuming keeping it connected at 10mps full duplex would be real bad in that aspect)

also slightly OT (on my own thread, heh ;)) - when i do speedtest on speedtest.net i get pings of 120ms with the beetel and 147 with the ut starcom. any reason for that? any fixes? also are these pings ok? strangely thats with mumbai server (thats where i am located) but with delhi server i get 54-60ms. shouldnt it be the opposite?

TIA guys

When you have wifi working why bother ethernet connection? Also, having wifi will not take anything drastically more power than usual. What is you internet plan, howz the actual download speed, do they match? Then don't worry.

i have the mtnl 1mbps plan and yeah download speed i get that. i was worried of the ping from gaming/browsing perspective. anything i can do to reduce it?
