I would like to know what is the advantage of installing custom firmware like DD-WRT and tomato firmwares over the stock...was googling a bit and could not find much apart from the ability to overclock for better range.

I would say, there are many advantages. You can tweak various settings that were unavailable in original firmware + it gives you so much control.

Check my Linksys WRT54G at : http://nishu.isa-geek.net:8080/

You can setup dynamic-dns just like I've done , setup Quality of Service, port forwarding, security, boost antenna signal to respectable ratios, block websites with keyword filtering, make vlans, run routing protocols i.e BGP or RIP v2 with another routers, setup static DHCP etc

All in all DD-WRT v23 SP2 made my Rs 2300 router a Rs 15000 router

Yes you can boost the signal strength but only at the cost of more power consumption.... lol which intern means heating up of chip which if ur not care full you can burn it.

But still if your in safe limits you can still enjoy lots of things....
Lynksis had made its firmware open source after which there are many 3rd party firmwares developed. You do get lots of features inside other than stock.

Now if your buying WRT54 be carefull, in India you get Ver7 which has lower memory and third party firmware cannot be flashed. However there is a lighter version of the firmware with strip down features which is also cool.
