I installed an 802.11g pcmcia card in my laptop and could only get about 20 feet from the router before losing signal. I tried the card in another laptop and it works fine. I put it back in the first one and changed channels. It only gets about 20 feet on channels 6 and 11, but at least 100 feet on channel 1. (remember, the 2nd laptop does fine on all channels.) Both laptops are running XP Home SP2 w/ all MS updates. The "bad" one is 3-4 years old, Compaq Presario 2100. It's an Athlon XP2200+ w/ 512MB RAM. There are no other wireless devices around except 5.8GHz phones. . . but remember, the 2nd laptop (about 2 years old) works fine.
I can just change the channel on my own router and it will work fine in my office, but the problem arises when I go to customer sites, hotels, etc. where I can't change the channel on which the router operates.
Any ideas?
