Hi,

My friend has a YOU telecom connection which came with a cable modem that connects to his laptop via USB connection.

But now my friend wants wifi in his house so that he can carry the laptop around.

Are there any wifi routers available which will accept the USB input from the cable modem? Or is he out of luck till he gets a new modem (ethernet based) ?

Thanks :)

nopes, but just call your isp to replace the cable modem with an ethernet one

in any case, there are dsl modems + wifi router combos available

ya..have told him to do that but hes not very hopeful [;)] I told him at the beginning only that he should have gotten the ethernet based one :)

Your frnd needs to get a SBG900, but thew MAC has to be registered with your ISP and that can be very problematic!!

Im really wondering which cable modem would only allow USB connections and not ethernet!! Please give the make of the cable modem... Im sure there is an ethernet port which has to be connected to a wireless router WAN port and then the wireless router will give out the WiFi signal...

There is a possibility of using ICS(internet connection sharing) by a server which connects to the modem and also to a wireless router to form a network.. But ICS is unreliable and the speeds would suck most times!!

Dont know the exact make. But i believe he says that the ethernet port exists but doesnt work :( might have to go over and try once ;) might be disabled in some way.

Cant use ICS as he only has 2 laptops in his house...no fixed PC which can connect to the modem and act as a server.

dude, if you are using the sb5100i model, it has got both ethernet and usb connections....you can hook up the wireless router to the ethernet port directly.

UPDATE: He got the ethernet port activated...turns out the mac address needs to be changed at his ISPs end so he wasnt able to use the ethernet. Now that ethernets working, need a good router.

Buffalo doesnt seem to be available in Pune. Does anyone know of its availability here?

Else, will linksys be good. Getting one for 2100 (dunno model)
