Hey,

I have the BSLN provided UTSTARCOM WA3002G4 wireless modem with a 512kbps unlimited connection. Which is located in our pc room on the ground floor.

I will be getting a laptop soon, which will be in my room, on the first floor ( I will be using it also on the 2nd floor in our library)

Also I'd like to use the Wifi for browsing on my N95 8GB.

I wanted to know how to boost the WiFi signal using an access point(I have no idea what it is, but people I spoke to said I need to get one of those)

I would like to know :

1: What is an access point, the brands that sell it, model number of the good ones?

2: Will I need to attach my modem and the access point by cable?
Will I need to extend the phone line cable? Or just use a LAN cable?

3: Are all brands/models compatible with the BSNL's modem?

4: Can I get a better modem instead of the BSNL's modem and use the existing UTSTARCOM WA3002G4 as an access point?

5: Should I use a range extender?

6: Can I get a big antenna and will it boost the signal?

7: Access point? Repeater? Range Extender? What are all those things?

BSNL Type II modem is a general wi-fi router. Actually they procure it from different vendor. Any wi-fi roter can be made to work with BSNL or any other service provider if you know the settings.

So any mods or gadgets that work with a general wi-fi router should work with BSNL router also. Why don't you give it a try?

Else you can buy one one range extenders from DX - they have user reviews too. Also you can post a question to their forum and see if you can get an answer.

you can just do what most people do nowadays, get a simple cheap wifi router for <2K and hook it up with ur bsnl connection. thats all you need to do, check some of our other threads for the details, but its a 5 minute process, and you have ur internet over wifi for laptop & phone. Dont forget to set a strong password for wifi and use wpa/ wpa2 for encryption over wifi to keep urself safe!

I think I'm just going to get the Linksys WRT54G2 (referred to me by a techenclave member) and connect it using the internet cable to my existing bsnl modem. Will that work?
