Hi,
I'm interested in a WIFI router on MTNL's ADSL2+ connection. I already have a MTNL ADSL2+ modem installed. 1 Ethernet connection for the PC and the rest on WiFi.
I'm thinking of getting ASUS WL-520gU Router and mod it with a firmware to run it for downloading torrents to save electricity :hap2:.

Please explain me the entire procedure of flashing the firmware etc. that is required to run torrents form the router itself.

I'm going to Lammy tomorrow so please hurry.

Thanks.

hi ,

i was goin to ask same question.

I searched net alot for the same, and found nobody is using ASUS WL-520gU as torrent downloader, some people are using ASUS WL-520gU as NAS device with tomato firmware.

Will love to knw if u can create a torrent downloader out of it.

I'll get the ASUS router and attach the MTNL's RJ45 to ASUS's WAN1 port. Next 1XRJ45 to my PC. Will I need to do any further settings for the ASUS router? Please reply soon, I'll be flashing it to Tomato after I understand the process properly.

I suggest not connecting it to WAN but to the LAN port itself. Connecting to WAN would imply the ASUS router would be used for dialing the connection (i kno not a dial up, but there wasn't a better way to put it)

Rather connect it to the LAN port and with the MTNL router's DHCP enabed (which most probably is), all clients connecting to the n/w would auto. be assigned IPs. Also for all the clients you connect, keep TCP/IP setting to obtain IP setting auto.

The asus router would, I guess merely act as a switch. In the config page for asus, keep it in Auto Config - DHCP mode and then disable its DHCP.

PS: Secure the n/w appropriately.

I got it for Rs.2400 from Lamington road. I'm having a hard time configuring it with wireless network. It's working fine with my PC.

I cannot assess my MTNL router( I used to access it 6months ago but for some reason its not accessing it anymore). So when I use the router as a switch(leaving WAN port empty) I cannot access internet at all. I'll need a step by step explanation from someone who's used this particular router with MTNL's connection.

give different IP addresses to the MTNL and the ASUS router. By default the MTNL one should be at 192.168.1.1 change the one on ASUS.

I have two ADSL connections, Airtel & MTNL and switch between them frequently so there is no way I could do that using a single WAN port, so I am using the wrt 54 G2 as a switch, works like a charm.

The best thing to do would be to leave the MTNL modem in bridge mode and enable PPPoE on the router. Will help since you intend to run the torrent client on the router itself.
