Wifi Router suggestion

Hey!

I'm looking for a VFM Wifi router that supports Gigabit wired LAN..

Wifi part can be normal wifi...

If this is not possible, how much will the cheapest N series wifi router cost?

also, will my laptop(Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) support 250mbps wifi? or Will I have to get an external Wifi adapter for it?

Thanks!

Okay.. have done a little reading up..

it clearly says ABG duh me.. :p

I think I'll stick with a Gigabit switch + g series wifi router and later convert to n series when it's finalized and the costs come down :)

Could ya help me out with suggestions and costs for the following..

For the Wired part of the network

-->4-6 port Gigabit Switch

-->Cat6 cable

-->Gigabit LAN cards

For the Wireless part

-->A good Wifi router (Cheaper the better :D )

Also does this sound correct?

Ads modem-->into WAN port of Wifi Router

Switch-->into LAN port of the Wifi Router

This should enable file sharing at gigabit speeds over the wired part of the network and at 54mbs btw the wireless part and the wired?

Thanks!!

EDIT:

Just made a quick Dia of the setup as I understand it.. Please do correct me if necessary!

>Zone A -~- Zone B and Zone C will get my ISP speeds

>Zone B -~- Zone C will get Wifi speeds(upto 54mpbs)

>Zone B -~- Zone B will get WIfi speeds

>Zone C -~- Zone C will get gigabit LAN speeds

Linksys WRT310N / WRT320N or the Linksys WRT610N. The WRT310N is being replaced by the WRT320N.

Edit: Not sure if the WRT310N has a gigabit switch. The WRT320N definitely has a gigabit switch.

How expensive is it? (WRT320N)?

But right now since all my wifi devices aren't N draft, I don't really need a N router...

so need suggestions(costs too!) for a Gigabit Wired Switch and a normal Wifi router!

Thanks!

Get WRT54G, I am refering to the simple model. ( blue & black ) Altghough you can also go for black spaceship model. Its better looking, priced at a couple of hundred rupees more than the standard model. The difference is just in the looks. They are very easy to configure. Priced @ Rs.2050 for WRT54G at NP.

You don't need a gigabit switch to connect the desktops. WRT54 G has 5 RJ45 in slots. One for "internet IN", that comes from the modem, the rest four are for LAN. (Your zone C)

Just 1 Caveat: You have to run your connection as Bridged instead of PPPoE. Not that big a problem though. Just set it once and then it stays like that forever.

That diag helped.

Phew thanks!! this is one section that gets the least views in TE!

The WRT54G has regular lan ports right? not Gigabit Lan ports hence I wanted the Gigabit switch.. but it looks like budget will not permit it now!

Also one more question...

What kind of range will the WRT54G provide??

I live in a single story 2400 odd sq feet house.. with many walls and corridors.. :S

Yeah, Fast ethernet ports/100Mbps. If its only for home use , I believe it would suffice. As far as the range is concerned, 1-2 wall surfaces won't effect it. You will get max signal strength. But more than that, the signal strength weakens, but still it would work good.

My WRT54G works at max strength for gf and ff, but going laterally further away(as no. of walls increases) does reduce signal strength, but still does work at next best level.

Are they anyother options I should look at if this isn't available in chennai?

Cause I don't want the WRT54G2 ( Internal antennae)

And also, Any idea about cat5e cabling?

tks! :)

The WRT320N should retail for maybe 5-6k. Not sure. Just a guess, since the WRT610N retails for around 8-9k.

Since your budget is a constraint, the WRT54GL will be a good option. It has external antenna. You can couple it with a cheap 8 port gigabit switch from the US via KMD. Should cost you maybe 4-5k. But in that case you'll end up spending around 6-7k anyway, in which case you might as well pick up a WRT320N!!

Yep.. thats out of the budget.. :(

I think I'll just stick to a basic wifi router with 10/100 Lan.. and make the upgdade later...

what are the good routers for around 2k?

Thanks! :)

Linksys WRT54GL, WRT54G2. Slightly over 2k though.

There's also some Buffalo routers for 2k or less which are pretty good. And there's also the Netgear WGR614 which I used to have which has worked flawlessly for me.

Hmm.. yes.. Come to think of it.. one did.. but I thought he was just trying to push his linksy router...

and I am actually worried now... I get real bad range on the Router.. infact as bad as the BSNL wa1003a :( is this normal? or have got a bad piece? It doesn't even cover a third of my house :( only say like 2 rooms that to with poor (~30%) signal

I have even flashed it with tomato.. didn't see much improvement.. and I guess I have voided my warranty by doing that too so really worried :S

what is the rough range of such a router??
