Another source has analyzed sales data and confirmed that in July/August Wii took the lead, with 9 million consoles, over the Xbox 360's 8.9 million consoles

Last month DailyTech reported on VGChartz's announcement that the popular Nintendo Wii had surpassed the XBox 360 in worldwide sales. At the time the statement was somewhat controversial and was met with some skepticism by fans of the other platforms.

Now another source, The Financial Times, has analyzed worldwide sales data through July, and through August for Japan, to determine the real console winner.

The FT's conclusion? There have been 9 million Wiis, 8.9 million Xbox 360s and 3.7 million PS3s sold worldwide.

The firm analyzed information from the leading retail tracking groups worldwide. Data was provided by Enterbrain in Japan and NPD Group in the U.S. and GfK of Germany, which tracks European sales. It is worth noting that while both studies declare the Wii sales king, their numbers are slightly different than VGChartz's sales figures.

When asked if the Wii was a success, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata humbly replied in a recent interview:

"Not yet, it's a good start. It's been a good start, but it's only the beginning. We want to have the customers continue playing. We want to continue coming up with new proposals to them, and have them keep playing. Only then can we say that we've accomplished our goals. We've been preparing to make things happen."

The Wii has certainly been a commercial hit for Nintendo as it has transformed Nintendo from a shrinking company in the Gamecube era into one of Japan's largest companies. The Wii has been popular with people of all ages, and is well liked for its casual "pick-up and go" style of gaming with a high level of user physical interactivity.

A recent survey on consume purchase intent showed the Wii Console obtaining the top mark for next-gen consoles, with a rating of 3.7/5.0. Xbox 360 was rated at 3.4/5.0 and the PS3 at 3.1/5.0. A rating of 3.0/5.0 is consider neutral.

A Microsoft replied tersely to this announcement,"We are exactly where we need to be at this point in our lifecycle, and would not trade places with anyone."

As Wii sales continue to top the charts each month, an exciting new accessory, the Wii Zapper is on the way.

To continue the good news for the Wii, it just had two exciting titles, Mario Strikers and Metroid Prime Corruption, released. Wii owners also have many exciting titles to look forward to, many of them exclusive and utilizing the motion sensing control system.

Upcoming titles for the platform include Guitar Hero III, the controversial Manhunt 2, Fire Emblem: Radiate Dawn (Wii exclusive), Super Mario Galaxy (Wii exclusive), Nights: Journey of Dreams (Wii exclusive), Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Wii exclusive), Soul Caliber Legends, Trauma Center: New Blood(Wii exclusive), Wii Fit, and Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Wii Exclusive) among others.

As of Q2 2007, Nintendo has sold 44.8 million Wii titles, though XBox 360 has been selling more software monthly for some time.

DailyTech - Wii Won! Report Confirms Nintendo as Worldwide Console Sales Leader

They have figured out the truth: the only way to make money is to make money on sales rather than lose it on sales. Therefore, to avoid having to subsidize, you have to be cheap. But to be cheap and successful, you need to appeal to a lot more people than FPS addicts. So make it broadbased.

The only thing I guess is what happens two years from now? No one knows Nintendo's refresh cycle. With the fact that they are already making a profit, nintendo can easily introduce a new model.

I agree with you there. But I don't see why they can't change the rules a bit. Remember, everything is relative here - after all, even if you buy a new model, you'll still be spending less than you would have with the others. Though that might lead to a backlash, I wonder. As you said gamers wouldn't accept a new model so soon. But most of Nintendo's sales are now to non-traditional gamers. And that market is huge. For all you know, people who didn't buy the Wii but heard of it a lot might decide to buy the next version. And there will always be an unlimited supply of such persons :)

I moved and it actually took me longer than expected to get an internet connection. Then it took me another month to get back up to speed with the internets before I finally came back here.

SO what has changed for me . Nothing .
bleh all this " this console is selling and is #1" is pure BS.
If its selling , its selling . Its not a reason to buy one unless you want it :)

@CKNISH

but its not about me . I was just an example .

Dont let these simple words confuse you . you might get a headache . :)

Yeah, screw console sales. It's not like sales matter to a console anyway. Who cares about the console wars anyway, eh? Not every console gamer on the planet, that's for sure.

yeah , the term " Herd Mentality " comes rushing to my head . Just because the Wii Sales are up , it does not qualify as a reason to buy one .

P4 dual core sold a lot . Does that mean , you should buy one . Absolutely hell not .

Its a good news item yes . and good news for Nintendo too . thats it .

I have atleast read 20 odd reports about the Wii winning the console war in the last 3-4 months! What is the internet press upto??

Maybe the Wii will win in every timezone and it'll be news!!

though actually the wii deserves to win the console wars (whatever that means)

i had a bunch of friends over for the indo-pak finals and guess what we celebrated the win by?

a bunch of tequila shots, pizza and several rounds of wii tennis....

photo realistic FPSs can go take a hike, gaming iis all about having fun , and that's what the wii is all about

What does technically limited hardware(Wii) have anything in common with technically faulty ones(P4D)?

Good to have you back Nish.

Haha, I remember using this argument back in the PC vs consoles debates. Its funny now its being used console vs consoles.

Wii shouldn't be compared to PS3/X360 imo. Its a fact to say its a console leader, but the best of the 3? That's opinionated :P

Almost every Wii owner who's been a long past gamer, has it coupled with PS3/X360.

Just because the Wii Sales are up , it does not qualify as a reason to buy one .

actually it does in a round-about way...more sales= bigger installed user base -> more incentive for game development companies to come up with good titles

True...for a non-gamer, the wii is easier to pick up and play with...

for a casual gamer like me, easy to play titles like Super Paper Mario and Zelda- twilight princess are a lot more fun than a Halo 2

(I have never been able to go beyond the 2nd or 3rd stage in any FPS title...incl. Far Cry and Half life 2)

or to have a couple of hours of non-sensical fun with friends bashing up lunatic rabbits in titles like Rayman Raving rabbids

However, for the segment that is currently in love with games like Bioshock, , it make a whole lot more sense to pick up the xbox360/PS3

So ther is no such thing like the best of the 3 as the Wiii addresses an entirely ifferent market than the 360/PS3
