Windows Win 7 to Win 10 Upgrade via overwrite install method?

Running Win 7 x64 Ultimate

Anyone upgraded (read as installed over) Win7 to Win10 ? How was it? Any issues you faced? Programs/drivers not working ?

Between win7 / win 10 which one would you recommend.

I've upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 on my old machine, if you have x64 then you can update to x64 only, I've not faced any issues, There were some drivers which needed to update but that depends on the hardware, you may or may not need to update the drivers. Almost all programs were working after the update.

I'd recommend you to update to Win10 but I'm linking some articles which will help you in deciding

Somewhere I read, Norton (or may be other antivirus) can pose a challenge during upgrade. So they suggested uninstall of the same before upgrading.
 
There are both pro and cons to it.
The worst con :The microsoft imposing shitty update service and junkware like xbox store.
The update service does not respect if you have a slower internet and will eat all data while it can like a hungry monster and still fail with installs at end of day.
On the positive side,the os is bit more responsive compared to win7,though it still suffers from sometimes stupid bugs.
I still feel sometimes going back to win7.

Can you share one or two incidents when you felt compelled to go back. Just to understand the magnitude of issues

One that I came across.
I simulated win10 over win7 in a VM.
- While exploring Win10 VM I noticed that although it allowed to set family, but also exposed children to outlook mail service .. which I do not intend to allow them at present
- The family account options aggressively promote putting dollars into account and allow children to purchase games, apps etc.
--- And my biggest rant at this point was .. "When I already supplied birth year of the child" .. Why on earth would MS not activate the apps/games age filter by default. I mean, if someone does not check the settings, then you risk kids able to access unwanted material.
 
When MS was trying to download creators update over a 1mbps connection.
Now,there is a workaround by setting the connection to metered connection but the MS is going to remove this feature as well in new updates.
 
Thanks.. Seems good so far. I'll upgrade.

(Thanks to Android flashing rule 0 ..... Always take a nandroid backup).. Have taken acronis image to revert in case don't like it.

I've disabled the Windows Update service for the same reason, there's also a small portable app which stops Microsoft to automatically download updates and allows you to choose and update them manually.

Just disable auto updates from the tool and never check windows update from the default windows update setting in windows, always check for update with this tool, you can also hide unwanted updates from within this tool.

Apart from that you can also use wushowhide.diagcab (read here) and Set your internet connection to Metered

can we switch back to keep updating setting any tool for that?
 
I think you can set a network as metered connection and then only critical win 10 updates would be downloaded when you are connected to that network
