Win7 unknown harddisk activity

I have installed Win7 and sp1.

Indexing has been disabled on all drives.

Still if i dont work for say 5 mins or the system is idle (not standby), the hdd led activity starts reading heavily & goes on & on unless i click somewhere or press a key. The net too is not connected.

I'm fed up of this mysterious activity.:@

Have installed purchased Eset2011 & update it regularly.

No virus like stuff or anything, system runs pretty smooth, no hangs, slowdowns or similar.

What should i do to stop that activity? What can be the reasons? What more services or anything need to be disabled?

I have already disable Superfetch and indexing.

First, try not to disable Superfetch. It's actually useful. Speeds startup, software launch, etc. If you still want to keep it disabled, that's upto you.

Second, use the Resource Monitor to see what's using the hard drive. You can get there either by typing "resmon" in the run command or clicking the Resource Monitor button in the Performance tab in the Task Manager. And then obviously you'd have to navigate to the Disk tab to see what programs are using the disk.

Yeah, used to do the same on my laptop too. Didn't had any av installed or anything, also disabled the indexing, still.... And my laptop couldn't play 1080p w/o stuttering on 7 because of this activity hence switched back to xp n now it also plays two 1080p parallely w/o stuttering. On win 7, two of my HDDs later developed bad sectors if it's anything conclusive although performance was very zippy earlier till this HDD activity started to slow things down.
