Windows Windows 10 Technical Preview

I never had any problems with Windows 8 but always had an opinion that it should not be used by casual users like my parents or even the folks in my company. The only reason for that was the confusing tiles layout which the user is first presented with upon logging into the OS.

The OS never really had good marketplace apps to replace the desktop applications. Not that we needed any. That however defeats the whole purpose of tiles and apps. Microsoft tried to fix this in windows 8.1 by letting people run apps as windows in the desktop view.

With Windows 10 they have gone a step further and taken the whole confusing stuff out. You directly boot into the dekstop mode. You have the proper start menu with a dedicated icon. You can see the windows app in the start menu. You can even run those apps as windows applications.

To a layman, Windows 10 is Windows 7 with a Windows 8 theme and can run Windows 8 apps. No offense to the folks at Microsoft.

I have used the OS for only 2 hours now but I think I can safely say that Microsoft has maintained its record of releasing a hit and flop OS alternatively. Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7, Win 8 and Win 10.

You can download and install the Technical Preview version from here -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/preview-iso

:p

Anyways, like you, I too never had any problems running Windows 8. Once you were through the Start Screen, it was all like normal Windows. I find Windows 8 more streamlined than Windows 7, which is also an excellent OS.

Windows 8 could be configured to boot straight to desktop, and so, Start Screen could be avoided. However yes, the absence of a Start Menu was really a huge step backward, and quite a stupid move by MS. It seriously affected the efficiency of using Windows.
What I missed more than Start Menu was the Recent Documents, which provided fast access to files which had been accessed recently. Although this can be achieved somewhat by doing a registry hack, which places a folder of Recent Items on desktop, but this is not as efficient as that on the Start Menu.

Absence of Start Menu is which would give trouble to the casual users.

They have included a Start Menu in Windows 10, but still, it's not like the old full fledged Start Menu. It is more of a compromise between the Start Menu and Start Screen. It still contains the right-click options in Start Menu, which are there in Windows 8.1 start button... and I find it quite ugly to be honest.

I ran Windows 10 not for long, but I did not find it much different from Windows 8. This could have been released as another update to Windows 8 IMO.
