Hi Guys,

I will be installing Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit on my new PC tomorrow or day after when I buy the below PC.

AMD PhenomII X4 945
MSI 785GM-E51
4GB 1333MHz DDRIII RAM
500 GB Seagate 7200.12
Sapphire HD5770 1GB GDDR5
Samsung B2030
CM Elite 310
Gigabyte Superb 460w
L.G. SATA DVD-Writer

I have read that its better to install XP and then Windows 7. Is this true?

My Question: Which OS to install first? Can someone provide step by step instructions for doing the same.

Also, the purpose of this new PC is to play games, watch movies and browsing. How best to partition my 500GB HDD? Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks. :)

You won't need XP...Just install Windows 7...

If you still want to use Win XP then install Win XP first and then Win 7. But I strongly recommend dumping XP as it won't be needed. Win 7 can handle all games...if you face any problem with much older games just run it in compatibility mode.

Yep

regarding partition,

I will chose 100-120 Gb for win7 if you play game on win7, other wise 40-50 is fine. or

80-100 GB for XP if you play game on XP.

So considering you'll play games on XP, you may have , XP - 80-100 GB (install game here), Win7 60 GB, rest of your storage can be used to store movies and stuff.

depends, for old games yes. newer games tends to use seven's memory management which is

much more superior than xp

if u wish to do a dual boot , then u have to install xp first as xp uses boot.ini to maintain boot sector and seven uses bootmanager.

just install xp on any partition of about 15-20 gb and afterward install seven, but remember seven do take a lot space than xp

so for seven make at-least 40-50gb partition.

also if u need xp for just programming ( like oracle, c++ ) or to run some legacy softwares, then u can simply use vmware ;)

if ( install = xp + seven ) then

xp = 20 ; seven = 40;

elsif ( install = xp ) then

xp = 25;

elsif (install = seven ) then

seven = 45;

end if;

lol , and put the rest for games and movie :D

Thanks for the info guys.

I want to play games on both XP and Windows 7, but mostly on Win 7(newer games). When I want to catch up on an older game I will install it on XP.

I plan to have 80 gigs for XP. 120 for Win 7 and rest is for data in multiple partitions. Does that sound good?

Now when I first install XP do I install it on 1 big partition and then shrink it later or create all these partitions while installing xp??

Hmm..I would also recommend to just install 7 and forget about XP, but its your choice anyways...I had a dual boot XP-7, ended up not using XP at all, now I have removed XP from the dual boot

No, just create 80GB(by booting from XP CD) partition and install XP on it...leave the remaining unpartitioned space. Now Install Win 7 creating 120GB(from win 7 bootable disk) partition...and leave the remaining unparitioned space. Now after you've installed both XP and Win 7....create parition as per your need from XP or Win 7.

Though I strongly recommend using only Win 7. You'll end up never using XP within few days.

I dual booted XP and 7 on my old rig. Being a true commerce student (whos ironically studying arts now) ... I allocated 7gb to XP and 45gb to Windows 7. Everything worked smoothly .... :)

Also if you install Windows 7 first and then XP then you will need to use Windows 7 disc to repair you startup, otherwise XP wipes out the option for booting into Windows 7 also. So its wise to install XP first and then Windows 7 ....
