I am right now on Vista 32-bit which came bundled with my Dell.

I am thinking about upgrading it to Windows 7 64-bit...

Won't my laptop support a 64-bit OS?

Specs:

15.6 " 720p WLED (1366x768) Display with TrueLife(TM) and Built-in 2.0MP Web Cam, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, Slot Load 8X DVD + /-RW Drive with DVD + R double layer write capability, 4GB Dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM, 320GB SATA 7200RPM Performance Hard Drive, Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 3MB Cache).

The Intel site says P8600 is 64-bit. Just confirming.

If you have purchased the laptop after June last year, check with Dell you should get a free copy of windows 7 ... also check the accesories you should have a 64 bit copy of your OS if not contact dell support they will mail it to you (you might have to pay mailing charges).

^^

I think the free upgrade is over. The site is mentioning this. Prior to this they were shipping it free, once the tag ID was verified.

It used to be Free Delivery by post before ... but been out of touch for a while so might be not be doing that. Regarding the option upgrade ... it might still be available through customer care but thanks for pointing that out.

cheers

I am using windows 7 64bit Enterprise Edition on my hp Elite Book 2730P, its working great, till now have not faced any issues.

Yes, you'll be able to install Windows 7 64 bit but you won't be able to upgrade it over Vista 32 bit. You'll have to perform a clean install.

Surely mate go for it. se7en is cool and x64 is great.

Use many apps that can actually take advantage of 64 bits ?

I can see it being useful in niche areas where vendors have coded for it but for a lot of userland apps its going to require a rewrite. That means it will be some time still till 64-bits becomes the norm for general users.

Windows 7 x64 is really nice OS you should install it also do download rivers first as you're using a laptop.Because i did a mistake of installing OS 1st on my sony vaio vpceb14en and then started searching for drivers i had to use hardware id's to download drivers. So download drivers drivers first and then do a install also as you are using 4 GB RAM you need a x64 OS.
