I read on many sites that windows 7 only allows one language to be installed during setup for all versions except Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. Is this true?

Its said, the option to install additional languages is greyed out in the Home premium and starter editions.

If anyone having rtm version of windows 7, can you try installing another language on to your machine, just to see if its possible?

if this is true, then this is really bad policy on Microsofts part. There are many people learning different languages and we will have to buy professional or ultimate just to add an extra language. :@

i'm studying japanese, and currently i can switch between Eng and Jpn with Left Alt + Left Shift combination. I dont want to spend extra 6k for this small feature only. :S

This should address all your doubts

Understanding Language Packs

btw, You can always install Language Pack(LIP) which are partial translations.I use the same, and it does the job. its the Multi User Interfacer(MUI) which requires additional license and only be installed on Ultimate versions. LIP can be installed on any version

Japanese is not available in the Asian Languages option. :S

just the other day i installed ububtu and after 5 - 10 mins of searching i was able to type in a textpad in japanese launguage. i think i'll switch to ubuntu and ditch microsoft if this is the way they are going.

bet this is going to be a bad step on their part with many language users complaining.

Indeed switching to Ubuntu, would work best. it save you, lot hard earn money. Good decision.

i'm angry about them restricting users to install a language of their choice.

why the heck should they do that? dont people in US learn any other language other than english? most probably someone will come with a hack to implement it on the home premium versions. but why should we hack in the 1st place when it was available on XP by just putting the dvd in the drive and installing the language of our choice? whoever came up with this rotten idea is a fool!

See this problem is only for Genuine windows users, rest people simply grab ahem of Windows 7 Ultimate and Upgrade

Voila! problem solved:P

seems like there's a hack going on where you copy the contents of the dvd and slipstream it with additional language packs. then you edit some registry settings in the slipstream version and you can then install additional languages. :D

note: google for "windows 7 home premium additional language slipstream" for sources.

just saw this on the MS site.

Add or change an input language

It says:
Applies to all editions of Windows 7

anyone having win7 home premium can add another input language (like japanese) and tell me if it works... else i might have to buy ultimate.........

Edit: all you have to do is go to Control Panel > type input language in search bar.

CLick on change keyboards or other input methods > Change keyboards > Add (a language)

Clarification: I just now found out that we can add any additional input languages in home premium. I have mentioned in above post how to do this.

To add additional display languages, i.e. to change all the windows, text etc (whole system) into another language you will need the Professional or Ultimate version.

Saves a lot of time since this has not been clarified anywhere except on MS site.
