Windows 7: Neither Shuts down nor Hibernates

Disciple
I recently reinstalled windows 7 64bit ultimate on my pc with following config:

C2D E8400

abit IP35E

Auzentech Xplosion

6GB Transcend RAM

PVR 150 TV Tuner

Before the fresh install, my pc used to run perfectecly fine..atleast it used to hibernate and shutdown quickly.

But now, when i select hibernate, Windows just locks itself and shows the lock screen. And when i shutdown...it takes more than 10 minutes to shutdown :S

Wats the solution for these issues...

First you should consider that if you are hybernating than it will take longer than general compyters because size of data written to hyberfile.sys == size of RAM, which in your case is 6 GB.

Now why it takes longer after fresh install, My doubt is on updates (have you installed them) or what different software have you installed?

For a solution you may try to restore it to some previous point and see what difference it makes.

Windows Cannot Hibernate Computer with More Than 4 GB Memory Tip and Trick

Microsoft confirms that user cannot put a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008 with more than 4 GB (gigabytes) of RAM (random access memory) installed into hibernation mode. This is not a bug but by design, as Microsoft disable hibernation support on PC with more than 4GB physical memory inserted because benchmark by Microsoft shows that performance is poor on a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory and that has support for hibernation, which requires sufficient disk space to contain the contents of the computer’s memory.

Can't say about the shutdown..

even i had a similar problem, turned out to be incomplete updates and certain software (in my case it was connectify which hogged resources during shut shutdown.

Try posting hijackthis report on forums.

Patch your Win7 completely from the net. Manually initiate the update process. Update all chipset drivers.
