Its not like you have go and install every app manually only the restrictive ones .
Software center does have ton of free & useful applications like Audio & Video players, firewall,Games,widgets,Graphic editing tools and list is countless. And install app from there is just one-click process. just click "Install" and software center would automatically download & install. I think its much approach better than going on random sites and then click there and here until you get a download link. After you still have sometimes unzip it and then run stupid installer(NEXT,NEXT NEXT). Still there a chance that you might get malware installed in process but linux is pretty much immune to Virus.
Huge Advantage in my opinion!
