Windows 7 V/S Ubuntu (My Exp.)

Its not like you have go and install every app manually only the restrictive ones .

Software center does have ton of free & useful applications like Audio & Video players, firewall,Games,widgets,Graphic editing tools and list is countless. And install app from there is just one-click process. just click "Install" and software center would automatically download & install. I think its much approach better than going on random sites and then click there and here until you get a download link. After you still have sometimes unzip it and then run stupid installer(NEXT,NEXT NEXT). Still there a chance that you might get malware installed in process but linux is pretty much immune to Virus.

Huge Advantage in my opinion!

I was playing around with KDE 4.6 (on Ubuntu 11.04 alpha2) this morning and it has "Accessibility" section in System Settings where you can enable a popup for CAPS lock going both ON and OFF :D hahaha. Couldn't find it in GNOME but its a simple matter to make a shortcut key run a script and you can use the "zenity --info --text CapsIsOn" command to display a dialog.

Also, KDE "aero snap" seems to be better than Win7/GNOME where if you drag the window title to middle area of the side of the screen it sizes the window to take up the entire half of the screen, but if you move the pointer near a corner then the windows becomes QUARTER size - very nifty!

To the OP @H2O , point being, just because you immediately dont like a distro does not mean you dump it ASAP... stick with it for a few weeks - if you hit a hurdle or annoyance then dont immediately jump back to Windows, rather try searching for a solution/alternative.

edit: In fact, it sounds like you're a candidate for KDE based distro instead of GNOME, so try Kubuntu 10.10 if not the 11.04 alpha2 :D
 
Will be giving Kubuntu a go. I don't remove the Distro normally this fast. I have Linux Mint installed on my Desktop from the past 10 months and I'm pretty happy with it. Will be giving Kubuntu a shot as my hand is itching to try KDE, now.
 
Hi i like your comment about ubuntu os........i need your help.I am using dell lap model name is inspiron n5010...recently i change the hard disk due to some problem on that...after that i try so many time to put suzi linux and ubuntu os but all the steps are failure..now i use windows7 if you know the soution tell me now i use windows7 os.I try to install this two os but this two os format the windows7
 
I'm always a windows loyal member right from Windows 95(even tried Win 1-3) to Windows 7(fingers crossed for Windows 8 milestone/beta this summer). Loves the simplicity of Windows OS. On other drive, there's always a Linux, Ubuntu or Fedora, for my other projects and works(security related). Simply love the freedom which Linux provides over my complete machine.

On my other laptop, I go with RHEL or SUSE even Solaris sometimes along with Macintosh.

All in all, along with all this different OS, i simply enjoy my Windows 7 and Ubuntu setup, no comparison between them.

I'm not exactly sure, what you want but from what I can understand, you are basically asking how to install Ubuntu, without removing Windows 7 ?

If that is so, there are 2 ways. For both you need to get the Live CD of the latest version (Make sure you don't download the alternate installer version.)

After which you can use WUBI, or install Linux by booting into the live CD and choosing the install option from the desktop.

I prefer using the 2nd way. Just make sure you take out about 10-15GB from any of your partitions and make a new partition. Create about 2-3GB of Swap rest is your Root. And, enjoy. It is very easy to install Linux. While installing Ubuntu you can also get the latest codecs to play all kinds of media.
 
Hi, guys .I am posting this just to clarify some points:

1.ubuntu standard release will not include software and codecs that are not "free" as per the definition of free software(free as in free speech not free beer ).some codecs are also not included due to legal issues.
2.Google chrome is not open source software.chromium is the open source project.also chromium is often more advanced than chrome due to open source development and then features are ported on to chrome.
3.In my opinion anyone looking for a smooth experience should go for linux mint specially the first timers.all codecs and software is already installed.
4.I think linux has to get more refined in battery management and energy efficiency as it is not as efficient as windows on battery life.
5.And last but not the least,linux is about learning and making your machine do what you want it to do with complete freedom.Getting involved in the community of your distro and helping others when you are able to.I also thing newbies to linux should stick to one distro and get intimate with it instead of changing frequently.
6.Just for the record i use puppy linux with windows vista.
 
1. Ubuntu installer (at least the next 11.04 release) has tickboxes to install proprietary codecs and you can install other properietary software later on like GPU drivers.

2. Correct, I use chromium but the version seems to be a bit lagging - Im on 9.0xxx while I think Chrome is now at 10.xxx so it should be updated soon I guess.

3. I have the smoothest experience with Ubuntu already and never felt the need to go for a smaller distro like Mint.

4. Agreed, this is not Ubuntu specific, rather Linux in general needs to catch up with Windows 7 in this department.

5. Fully agree here!

6. I mainly use Ubuntu (am a fanboi too) and also like Windows 7 and Vista a lot (especially the AERO Glass UI) despite the criticisms of Vista.
