Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

downloaded the 32 bit did a root install. No problems at all. Coming to the os ,no start menu, huge let down for the pc power users (my opinion). Hugely optimised for touch interface.

Have not tried in vmware, but have installed in my laptop. Also, what file extract process are you talking about? The file given is an iso which you need to mount.

Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

as one the member said, optimized for phones and not PC's, found it buggy but it is a developer preview so can't complain.

Didn't like the metro UI on PC, MS should have developed mobile and PC OS separately.

For the same reason: Windows 8 Will Be an Upgrade Failure, IDC Predicts

Windows 8 isn't even in beta yet, but IDC is already predicting that very few PC owners will upgrade from Windows 7 to it. And that's just for a start -- the company also predicts that Windows 8 tablets look to be a bust as well. Those predictions are contained in a new report, "Worldwide System Infrastructure Software 2012 Top 10 Predictions."

The report claims the following, according to Mary Jo Foley:

"Windows 8 will be largely irrelevant to the users of traditional PCs, and we expect effectively no upgrade activity from Windows 7 to Windows 8 in that form factor."

The reason for that is fairly obvious: If what I've seen in the Windows 8 developer preview holds true to the finished version, there's not much new that's useful to owners of desktops and laptops. The new Metro interface is clearly designed for touchscreens and tablets, and the Windows 8 desktop looks and works very much like Windows 7. There's simply not enough there for anyone to want to upgrade.

Enterprises in particular will stay away because of the compatibility problems Metro is likely to cause in big companies, as well as the retraining and additional support Windows 8 would require.

Anyone buying a new PC, or course, will get Windows 8, so it'll ship plenty of copies. There just won't be many upgrades.
Given that Windows 8 seems largely designed for tablets, how will Windows 8 tablets fare? IDC is again unimpressed, and expects Windows 8 tablet sales in 2012 to be "disappointing."

IDC isn't alone in that. Forrester recently warned that because Windows 8-based tablets will be so late to market, they'll likely fail against the iPad, Android tablets, the Amazon Kindle, and the Barnes and Noble NOOK.

Of course, the official release of Windows 8 is still some time away. Microsoft could reconsider its decision to leave the desktop largely untouched, and if that's the case, there might well be a significant number of upgrades. But given the way things are now, don't expect Windows 8 to see the upgrade numbers that Windows 7 has seen.

I had read an article in which Microsoft claimed that it was not the final version and that the final version would have many features which would appeal to the desktop users as well. Let's see how final version turns out . . . :)

Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

some time back i read a guide about this on lifehacker but it is for laptop screens afaik.
Microsoft would probably adding something similar to a android market .they are late to the party again(windows phone 7) .I would like to see multi virtual desktops.

Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

Yes, can confirm it works on VMware but you need its latest version (VMware Workstation 8) to work. else you won't get ahead to the installation options.

Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

I did not try it on vmware. I loaded win 8 dev preview on a different hdd and worked fine.

works like charm its a developer preview for god's sake. i find it to be absolutely amazing. there are going to be tons of improvement. wait and watch..

and yeah, someone said something about start button. buddy press windows key and you get to desktop. and to access apps.. one does not have to goto start button in win 8. that is the main attraction of this OS, i think.

for preformance, i found it better than windows 7, what else can i say.

anyone wanting to load win 8 without losing the existing OS can try to do it by following these steps.. i guess they should work.. practically..

create a vhd

mount it

create win 8 bootable usb

boot with usb

install on hd

dual boot ready

enjoy both worlds

aah found it..

follow this for detailed steps

Re: Windows 8 Devloper Review Need Help !

Want the old start menu back with no tiles :

rename shsxs.dll to shsxs.dll.old in C:\windows\system32 folder, log off, log back on, normal windows start menu returns.

Somebody try to install in Vmware and pls guide me.

It will only install in VMWare workstation 8 or use Oracle Virtual Box for installation. Windows 8 require some hardware emulations which is not there in earlier VMWare workstation or VMWare server version, only there in VMWare workstation 8.
