Windows 8 - License agreement

Hello everyone,

It seems I lost my Windows 8 product license (purchased last month online and installed on my old MB and CPU) because I recently changed my MB and CPU. Old ones are dead due to some power fluctuations.

Microsoft experts says, the license no longer valid since I have changed the MB (and I guess MAC address) so I need to purchase again .. :(

So be cautious about your system especially about CPU and MB change once you have paid and activated your OS .

NB: let me know if you have any other thoughts on this license agreement, whether I can request MS to get a copy on my new system with old product id.

regards,
Anand

If you have purchased the license in the recent offer for Rs. 699 or so (for upgrading the OEM version of earlier releases of windows), what the windows agent had told you is correct.
What was sold to you is just an upgrade license for that specific machine. License dies with the machine.

What if you purchase the on from microsoft.com worth rs 2000? will it expire the same way?

OEM upgrade licenses die with the Machine for which you have purchased it. (irrespective of the amount you paid). am I clear now?
Most people had only bought an OEM upgrade license of Windows 8 in recent days as it was/is available for cheap.

^^ If its an OEM license, its bound to the machine. Changing the motherboard can indeed invalidate the license and Microsoft is not obligated to provide you with new license. Only Retail licenses can be migrated to other machines or reused after major upgrades.

Or, if you have purchased the same motherboard, with exactly same specifications, they will certainly help you.. if not, then i'm afraid you'll have to purchase a new one..

My MB and CPU are new and different than the older models. ( the unique identifier is the MAC address I guess. doesnt matter MB model and CPU).
Now I need to try repair the old MB and use the old license somehow ..

Anand
